When Wassim Essid returned to Tunis on 7 August, he was greeted by a jubilant crowd - not for a football triumph, but for a historic achievement in table tennis.

The 17-year-old prodigy had just clinched the U-19 singles title at the inaugural 2025 ITTF Africa Youth Cup in Lagos, Nigeria.

After narrowly missing out on the singles title at the 2025 ITTF Africa Youth Championships, Essid bounced back with a commanding performance in Lagos.

“I’m so happy with this win because it’s the first edition of the African Youth Cup,” he said. “I was a little sad after losing in the final of the African Youth Championship, so I wanted to take revenge and win this one. I’m very proud of myself for making my country and my family proud.”

Essid, son of former Tunisian national champion Jihen Belkahia, continues to elevate Tunisia’s presence on the global table tennis stage with consistent performances across continental and international tournaments.

His journey began at age six, when his mother, then a coach, introduced him to the sport. By 14, he had already made national headlines, winning both the U-15 and U-19 boys’ titles in Tunisia.

“I started playing table tennis at the age of six while in primary school. My mother, a former champion, introduced me to the sport. I also played football, inspired by my father, who was a former player. But ultimately, I chose table tennis.”

He credits his parents for their unwavering support.

“My parents are my biggest supporters at every level. They’ve always backed me morally and financially, and continue to encourage me. I began training with my mother, who still coaches me occasionally.”
