Jurgen Klopp has made his thoughts perfectly clear on potential Manchester United transfer target Alexis Mac Allister following his high praise of the Liverpool star. Mirror Football reported on Monday that United are weighing up a shock bid for their arch rivals’ midfielder.

It’s understood Old Trafford chiefs are keeping a close eye on the Argentina international amid speculation that he could leave Anfield this summer, having joined from Brighton for an initial fee of £35million back in June 2023.

Mac Allister, who won the Premier League under Arne Slot last season, has failed to reach the same heights this season, which has largely been a difficult campaign for the South American. United, meanwhile, are on the hunt for Premier League-proven central midfielders in the summer and could anger Liverpool by making an approach for the 27-year-old, who is under contract until 2028.

While the Reds are unlikely to let him leave to a historic rival, United’s interest is unsurprising given the quality the 2022 World Cup winner possesses. His remarkable ability in central midfield was referenced several times by his former Liverpool manager Klopp, who brought him to Merseyside and coached him for one season before leaving and taking up his current role with Red Bull.

The German heaped praise on the "incredible" Mac Allister after just a few months of working with him. "He is a fantastic player and I love everything about him," said Klopp. "He is super smart, tactically and off the pitch as well, so it is really nice to work with him.

"His best position? He is too young for me to know. He is a midfielder, I can tell you that! If we defend well as a team, he can definitely play in the six position because there are small spaces and he sees situations really well. Then, we have got an extra footballer on the pitch, which is really cool."

Later in the 2023/24 season, as Klopp was nearing the end of his legendary tenure, he singled out Mac Allister’s off-field personality, labelling him one of his favourites in the dressing room in what will surely be seen as a green flag by United bosses.

Klopp said: "He’s educated in the best possible way. He’s really polite, confident, funny, smart and an incredible footballer. Oh my God! You watch training sessions and the coaches look at each other like, 'Wow, what was that?' And only from time to time you see it in games as well [because] first and foremost we still train more often than we play.

"How he interacts with the other boys, how he took the South American outfield player department under his wings naturally, without telling them what to do but just how they came together. It’s wonderful.

"I loved it from the first moment when we met before we signed him and when I met his dad. The football understanding in his family is obviously second to none: dad a former professional, uncle a former professional, brothers professionals, cousins professionals. So they all eat and breathe football and that’s so good.

"Of course I love him. I don’t know where the boys get it from that he’s kind of the manager’s pet or favourite because I have a lot of them but yes, he’s definitely one of them!"

In April 2024, Mac Allister rescued crucial points against Sheffield United with a long-ranged strike, which led to Klopp speaking about his influence from anywhere on the pitch. Klopp explained: "He is a super important player for us, a wonderful boy.

"I met his dad after the game. He said thank you, I said gracias. That was the full conversation! I said hola as well and then my Spanish ends. Wonderful player, wonderful boy and really happy for Liverpool that we got him.

"It was not about him being in the wrong position. He played a good game in the first half too. You can play a game like this with a footballing six if you want. If we talk about Macca – is he better as an eight or a six? There are two different subjects to talk about.

"One is his defensive part. That was obviously really good. I prefer him in eight as well but we are not playing in dreamland. We had a problem in the position tonight and in the end it worked out. The impact he can have is massive from everywhere."

Mac Allister's versatility, character and experience would make him a valuable addition to any team, though United would be extremely lucky to count him among the short list of players to have played for both clubs, including Michael Owen and Paul Ince, come the summer.
