With their campaign off to a rollicking start, defending champions India will look to deliver another all-round performance as they target a convincing win over lower-ranked Sri Lanka in their second Pool A match of the men’s hockey competition at the Asian Games on Tuesday (September 22).

The title-holders started their campaign with a big 13-1 win over unfancied Indonesia on Sunday (September 20). They are expected to once again win handsomely against the Lankans on Tuesday (September 22).

The match against Sri Lanka should be a cakewalk for the Indian and chief coach Craig Fulton will be keen to test all his players ahead of two tough pool matches against South Korea and Japan.

Aadhya Tiwari and Jay Meena’s promising campaign in the Asian Games soft tennis mixed doubles event came to an end in the round of 16 after a hard-fought 2-5 loss to Philippines’ Christy Sanosa and Sherwin Ray Nuguit. The Indian pair went down 4-2, 2-4, 2-4, 3-5, 2-4, 5-3, 6-8.

Earlier, Tiwari and Meena had won two of their three matches in the Group B round-robin league to finish second with four points and qualify for the knockout stage.

South Korea topped the group with six points.

The Indian men’s sepaktakraw team squandered a one-match lead to lose 1-2 to hosts Japan in the its opening Group B regu event fixture on Monday. India had started on a bright note, winning the first match 15-13, 15-9 but couldn’t keep up as Japan mounted a comeback.

India will next face Malaysia in its second group-stage match on Tuesday (September 22, 2026).

India’s boxing campaign at the Asian Games got off to a fine start with Sumit Kundu clinching a unanimous decision win over Thailand’s Bunjong Sinsiri in the 70kg opening round on Monday (September 21, 2026). He will now take on Iraq’s Ali Qasim Hamdan Al-Sarra.

Kundu, one of the two Indian boxers who failed to medal at the Commonwealth Games last month, put on a dominant show in the last round to defeat Sinsiri 5-0 and move to the pre-quarterfinals.

India have fielded an 11-member team, including six men and five women.

India’s Himanshu Dhillon and Rudrankksh Patil won individual silver and bronze, respectively, at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. The duo had earlier helped India secure silver in the men’s 10m air rifle team event.

Himanshu finished second with 252.4 points, while Rudrankksh claimed bronze with 230.9. China’s reigning Olympic champion Sheng Lihao won gold with 254.2. Both Indians had qualified for the final after strong performances in the morning’s qualification round.

Indian MMA fighter Suchika Tariyal made history by winning India’s first-ever Asian Games medal in Mixed Martial Arts, securing bronze in the women’s Traditional MMA 60kg category in Japan.

After defeating Mongolia’s Altanchimeg Baigalmaa 2-0 in the quarterfinals, Tariyal lost 0-2 to Singapore’s Teo Hui Hoon in the semifinals. However, both losing semifinalists are automatically awarded medals in Traditional MMA, earning Tariyal a historic bronze and adding to India’s growing medal tally.

Star Indian swimmer Srihari Nataraj qualified for the 50m backstroke final at the Asian Games here on Monday.

The two-time Olympian clocked 25.37 to finish third in his heat and joint ninth overall to book his place in the final.

Rishabh Das, who had finish sixth in the men’s 100m backstroke on Sunday, clocked 25.41s to miss out the final by a whisker. He finished 11th overall, ending as the reserve.

India clinched a silver medal in the men’s 10m air rifle team event at the Asian Games here on Monday, with shooters Rudrankksh Patil and Himanshu Dhillon also qualifying for the individual final.

Rudrankksh, Himanshu and Parth Mane finished with a team total of 1890.1.

China claimed the gold with a world record team total of 1899.0 points, bettering their previous mark by 0.6 points.

South Korea produced a strong fightback but had settle for bronze with a total of 1884.2 points.

In sepak takraw, India started off their three regu-match series against Japan in Group B with a 2-0 win.

Team India started their regu Group B match with a point and eventually went down 3-6. The visitors tried clawing their way back, reducing the deficit to 5-6. Japan managed to take the lead again at the time of timeout, leading by 10-5. After the time out, India managed five quick points, making it 10-10. India managed to secure the first set 15-13, making a fine comeback from being down 5-10 to winning 15-13.

India started the second set on a tight note with a 2-2 scoreline, but eventually rattled Japan team with a stunning lead of 9-3. The Indian team continued to demoralise the local favourites with their game, taking a 14-5 lead.

India eventually prevailed, beating Japan 2-0 (15-13, 15-9) for a positive start in their three-match regu series.
