Roy Keane and Gary Neville both in full agreement about Man Utd's 11th-hour bid to sign Rayan Ait-Nouri

Sky Sports pundits Roy Keane and Gary Neville have dropped their telling verdicts on Manchester United’s failed attempt to sign Rayan Ait-Nouri from Manchester City.

The shock news emerged on deadline day that the Red Devils had made an approach to land left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri in a loan deal before the window closed.

Manchester United had been tipped to sign a new left-back in the summer transfer window to provide a much-needed alternative to Luke Shaw this season.

However, Ineos failed to bring a new full-back option to Old Trafford after being linked with several players, including Alejandro Balde and Lewis Hall.

Roy Keane and Gary Neville both feel that the Rayan Ait-Nouri move ‘exposed’ Man Utd’s ‘desperation’ in the window

According to BBC Sport, Manchester United had only been interested in bringing Manchester City star Rayan Ait-Nouri to Old Trafford in a loan deal rather than a permanent transfer.

However, it is believed that the ‘only acceptable outcome’ for City would have been a loan for the 25-year-old left-back, with an obligation to make the move permanent.

However, City rejected United’s approach for Ait-Nouri and the Red Devils walked away on deadline day empty-handed before the transfer window slammed shut.

Speaking on The Overlap’s Stick to Football podcast, Gary Neville has suggested that United’s handling of the situation was not the best and Roy Keane fully agreed.

“Was it sloppy with the Ait-Nouri one, with two hours to go, to get dragged into that type of situation? It’s not a great look, is it?” Neville asked.

Keane responded: “No, it’s not.”

United legend Neville was left scratching his head at how long it took the club to make an approach for a defender rather than planning for the move in the summer.

“Well, when you know everyone’s been talking about a left-back, centre-back all summer, and then with two hours to go, you’ve had a nibble,” he added.

Keane then asked: “Is that true?”

Keane dropped the most telling assessment of the situation after he interjected during Neville’s point by highlighting the ‘desperation’ of United in the 11th hour.

When discussing Ait-Nouri, Neville said: “I don’t know, but it still looks a bit like […] even if it’s not […].”

Keane responded: “Desperate. They are desperate. But for a club like United, you shouldn’t be getting too desperate with two hours to go.”
