Aiden McGeady thinks Celtic have been given a 'stark reminder' of where they are after Champions League exit

Celtic suffered one of the most embarrassing defeats in recent history after losing to Kairat Almaty on penalties.

Brendan Rodgers’ side were lacklustre across the whole 120 minutes and missed penalties from Adam Idah, Luke McCowan and Daizen Maeda meant that Kairat beat Celtic, becoming only the second team from Kazakhstan to qualify for the main league phase of the Champions League.

Questions will be rightly asked about the performance of the players, the decision making from the Celtic manager and anger at the board.

However, Aiden McGeady believes that this could be an eye-opening moment for everyone associated with the club.

Speaking live on BBC Sportsound after the game, McGeady thought that the Hoops lacked any sort of quality across the pitch and that it is a reminder of the problems that the club face right now.

He said: “There was a real lack of quality, a real lack of intensity.

“I thought you would see a massive difference in the two performances, but they were very similar.

“It’s a terrible way to go out the Champions League, but it’s a stark reminder.

“I do not think Kairat a top level by team any stretch of the imagination, so I think it’ll be interesting to see how they get on.”

Celtic must wake up or continue sleepwalking to more problems

For so long now, Celtic have been the dominant force in Scotland but are at risk of sacrificing future chances of success.

A lack of investment in the playing squad has left Rodgers visibly frustrated and the gamble of waiting for Champions League football to make signings has backfired spectacularly.

It was already going to be a busy final week for Celtic in the transfer window and it’s now just got a whole lot bigger.
