Real Madrid confirmed a serious injury for Brazilian forward Rodrygo. The club shared the update after medical tests on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

The winger suffered the injury during a La Liga match against Getafe. The game ended in a 1-0 defeat for Real Madrid. It took place on Monday, March 2, at the Santiago Bernabéu. Rodrygo came on as a second-half substitute.

The 25-year-old played about 43 minutes in the match. He later showed clear signs of a knee problem. Medical tests later confirmed the damage. The injury rules Rodrygo out for the rest of the season. He will also miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup with Brazil.

Real Madrid Confirms Serious Knee Injury

Real Madrid released the official diagnosis after the medical tests. The club confirmed damage to two parts of Rodrygo’s right knee.

“Following tests carried out today on our player Rodrygo by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament and a rupture of the lateral meniscus of his right leg.”

Doctors have now scheduled surgery for the Brazilian forward. Recovery from this type of injury often takes six to ten months. That timeline rules him out of the remaining 2025-26 season.

The injury also removes him from Brazil’s plans for the 2026 World Cup. The tournament will take place in North America later this year.

Rodrygo has become an important player for Real Madrid in recent seasons. His speed and creativity helped the team in major matches. His absence now comes during a critical period for the club.

Real Madrid continues to compete in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League. The team must now adjust its attack without the Brazilian winger.

Rodrygo Message After Season-Ending Diagnosis

Rodrygo shared an emotional message after the injury became public. He addressed both his club season and his absence from the World Cup.

“A huge obstacle has arisen in my life, in my career, and it prevents me from doing what I love most for a while. I’m out for the rest of the season with my club and out of the World Cup with my country, a dream which everyone knows how much it means to me. All I can do is be strong as always; that’s nothing new.”

He also described the personal impact of the moment.

“One of the worst days of my life. I’ve always been afraid of this injury. Maybe life has been a little cruel to me lately. I don’t know if I deserve it, but what can I complain about? I’ve experienced so many wonderful things, which I didn’t deserve either.”

The winger now begins the long recovery process. Surgery and rehabilitation will shape his return timeline.

Support From Brazil Federation and Neymar Jr.

Brazil’s football federation also released a statement after the injury news. The organization showed support for the national team forward.

“The CBF expresses its solidarity with the athlete Rodrygo Goes, forward for Real Madrid and the Brazilian National Team, who suffered a serious injury during the match against Getafe in the Spanish League.”

“Rodrygo sustained an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament and the outer meniscus of his right knee. The CBF wishes the athlete a speedy recovery and that he returns to the pitch as soon as possible.”

Neymar Jr. also shared a public message for his teammate.

“My number 10, my boy, my heir (as I call you), I only ask you for one thing. Take care of your head. Now is the time to put everyone you love around you. As you told me, you didn’t deserve to go through this now. But who are we to doubt God’s plans? I am sure you will be back to your best. I love you, and as much as you gave me support, I will be here for you.”

Real Madrid will now monitor Rodrygo’s recovery in the coming months. The forward hopes to return in time for the 2026-27 season.
