Liverpool name lineup to face Southampton as two big names miss out for Reds

Trent Alexander-Arnold is absent from the Liverpool squad to face Southampton on Sunday.

The Reds right-back was taken off in the first half of the 2-0 win over Aston Villa before the international break and subsequently pulled out of the England squad for the Nations League matches against Greece and the Republic of Ireland. Conor Bradley takes the vice-captain's role at right-back.

Liverpool are also still without goalkeeper Alisson Becker, with Caoimhin Kelleher continuing in his absence, while there is a return to the matchday squad for Harvey Elliott for the first time since he fractured his foot on England under-21s duty in September. Kostas Tsimikas is out after picking up a knock in training.

Arne Slot has opted to leave South American pair Alexis Mac Allister and Luis Diaz on the bench following their gruelling trips away on international duty, but Darwin Nunez does come in from the start after he opened the scoring against Villa a fortnight ago.

Slot warned of the tiredness his South American stars face before the game, saying: "I will particularly keep an eye on the players that have come back from South America - and that is not only Macca. It’s also Darwin and Lucho.

"You have to keep an eye on them, especially the ones who played twice for 90 minutes. You see how they are doing, how fit they are, you talk to them a bit more about how they feel - more than I do with the ones who played in Europe."

Southampton are without goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale for the clash at St Mary's, with veteran stopper Alex McCarthy coming into the side. Former Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana also starts for the hosts.
