Manchester United are targeting a second consecutive Premier League win when Michael Carrick's side travel to face Everton on Sunday. Though excitement is building around the arrival of Carlos Baleba, the new signing is unlikely to feature this weekend as he continues to work his way back to full fitness.

Carrick has overseen a makeover at Old Trafford since taking charge, with midfield the primary focus of United's summer spending. Despite the activity in that department, concerns persist among the fanbase about whether the overall squad depth is sufficient, especially as the club prepares to return to Champions League football.

The left-back position was widely identified as an area in need of reinforcement heading into the window, yet United ultimately allowed the transfer deadline to pass on Tuesday without addressing it. MEN Sport takes a look at the latest headlines around Old Trafford.

Redknapp lauds ex-United target

Jamie Redknapp has suggested United missed an opportunity by failing to sign Mamadou Sangare this summer. The Mali international was among the names linked with a switch to Old Trafford as Carrick oversaw a transformation of his midfield.

Sangare, 24, eventually moved to Brentford following a club-record £39million exit from Lens. He has adapted effortlessly to the Premier League, prompting Redknapp to believe he will soon command a nine-figure valuation.

"The best business I like is Sangare at Brentford," said the former Premier League midfielder. "I think he's going to be a wonderful signing for them. He'll probably be worth £120m in a few years. He'll go to Brentford, establish himself as a top player."

The Sky Sports pundit went on to elaborate that he believes Sangare appears to be the standout Premier League signing of the summer. And at under £40m, he could have represented a more cost-effective alternative to the likes of £50m Andrey Santos or £70m Baleba.

To his credit, Santos has looked every penny worth the investment so far, while Baleba is still yet to make his mark in midfield. That said, Brentford continue to showcase their shrewd eye for transfer market recruitment having unearthed yet another gem.

Hands-off warning over Hall

Matthias Jaissle has delivered an indirect warning to United over the future of Lewis Hall. Newcastle's left-back was reportedly United's primary target before the club failed to add a new name in that position.

Magpies boss Jaissle has responded by heaping praise on his player ahead of any future attempts by United to secure his signature. The German has made clear his desire to see the £75m-rated Hall dazzle at St James' Park for the long term.

"He's a huge, huge potential player," said Jaissle in a press conference this week. "He's delivering already on a high level but we all know that there's much more to come.

"We're really excited that he is a part of that team and hopefully also in the long term."

United's inability to recruit a new left-back this summer suggests the club will mount a fresh bid to reinforce that position next year. Newcastle, though, will once more look to fend off any approaches for their talent.
