Ange Postecoglou next job, rejects Fenerbahce, Bayer Leverkusen not interested, Nottingham Forest, latest

Ange Postecoglou has reportedly knocked back a job offer from Turkish giants Fenerbahce, according to Turkish football journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu.

Fenerbahce recently sacked legendary manager Jose Mourinho after they failed to qualify for the Champions League, losing a two-leg playoff to Portuguese outfit Benfica last month.

The Istanbul-based club reportedly held talks with Postecoglou as well as former Italian national team manager Luciano Spalletti, who also declined due to his unwillingness to take on a new role so soon after his sacking in June.

Postecoglou on the other hand is reportedly eager to find a new job.

The approach from the 28-time Turkish champions was not the kind of opportunity the former Tottenham boss is after, however.

“Ange Postecoglou informed Fenerbahce that he was awaiting offers from several clubs in the top five leagues,” Sabuncuoglu said.

German outfit Bayer Leverkusen were another club Postecoglou had been linked to during the current international break.

The Bundesliga side recently sacked former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag after just two league matches, but the latest reports from Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg state that former Danish national team boss Kasper Hjulmand is the front runner to take over.

German outlet Bild has since reported Postecoglou is out of the running for the job at last season’s Bundesliga runners-up.

“Ange Postecoglou (60/most recently Tottenham) and former Juve coach Thiago Motta (43) do not play a role, according to BILD information,” the report read (translated from German).

Postecoglou truly has his eye on a return to the English Premier League, however.

The Australian has been touted as a potential candidate for Nottingham Forest, if and when, current boss Nuno Espírito Santo departs the club off the back of his rift with Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis.

The likes of Manchester United and West Ham, whose managers Ruben Amorim and Graham Potter are under pressure, could also be options.

But it is likely that Postecoglou would need to bide his time for a return to the English top flight with no movement taking place during the international break given it is so early in the season.

If a move to one of Europe’s top five leagues does not materialise, there has been talk of Postecoglou returning to Celtic.

Former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is in his second stint in Glasgow, but is yet to renew his contract following squabbles with the club hierarchy.

Rodgers has also been linked as a candidate for other roles popping up across Europe, and former Scottish international Charlie Mulgrew said in a recent radio interview that he has heard whispers of a possible Postecoglou comeback to Celtic Park.

“I have heard people mention that if Brendan Rodgers leaves in the summer, that he might be somebody who would potentially come back,” Mulgrew said.

Postecoglou is adored in the green and white half of Glasgow as he won the domestic treble with Celtic before joining Tottenham in 2023.
