Clancy opts for move to VVV-Venlo
Eanna Clancy has turned down a number of offers in the Premier Division to sign for Dutch outfit VVV-Venlo.The UCD captain has been impressive in the First Division and had the pick of a number of options as his time with the Students came to an end.The defender has opted to move to the second tier in the Netherlands on a two-year-deal.Clancy began his career with Sligo Rovers, playing as a 17-year-old before taking up a scholarship with UCD.He said: "I am very happy with this step to VVV-Venlo. After my years at University College Dublin, I was ready for a new challenge and the opportunity to play football in the Netherlands immediately appealed to me."The conversations with the club have given me a good feeling and I think this is a nice environment for me to develop myself further. I look forward to getting to know my team-mates and the staff and to play in De Koel for the first time."Clancy is the latest departure from Belfield after Seán Murphy made the move to Shamrock Rovers earlier this month, although the 18-year-old defender will stay with College, on loan, until the end of the season.Luke O'Regan is also off to Tallaght, after his loan with the Students ended, while attacker Mikey Raggett has joined UNC in Charlotte.On Wednesday Derry City, one of the teams chasing Clancy, added 25-year-old English defender Brooklyn Lyons-Foster from HJK Helsinki in Finland.Lyons-Foster primarily plays as a right-back and spent his early career with Tottenham, coming through their academy system.He was a regular in the Premier League 2 side and was twice named on the bench for the Spurs first team during his time there.Lyons-Foster moved to Finland in February 2024 and appeared over 50 times for the Helsinki side, playing Champions League and Europa League football.He went straight into the Candystripes squad for their Conference League qualifier against Rejika in Croatia.His brother Kodi plays for Coleraine, who face Helsinki in the Conference League this evening.
