The crazy stats which explain Emi Martinez’s bad start to his Chelsea career

Emi Martinez has not had a strong start to life at Chelsea, but there are some important stats which give that context.

Given the first international break is here, Football.London have just done an interesting piece looking back at Chelsea’s signings from the summer and giving them an early mark on how they’ve got on.

It raised some interesting debates, and in particular we were curious about Emi Martinez. The Aston Villa goalkeeper came in just before the deadline, and has been under siege every since.

There’s no doubt there were several goals he could have done better with – and you’d struggle to give him above a 6/10 at best. But writer Jake Stokes points out that he’s also been under an exceptional amount of pressure.

The important context behind Emi Martinez’s early struggles at Chelsea

Stokes notes that Martinez has made the joint second most saves in the league, despite not having played on the opening weekend. If he had already made the move by then, he would no doubt be winning. He’s faced the joint most shots on target in the whole league.

That is important context – he’s made mistakes, but when you expose your goalkeeper to that many shots, you increase the chances a mistake will be made.

Improve the defending ahead of him and he will look far better, pretty quickly. We are very confident of that.
