Daryl Mitchell and Mark Chapman stitched together a partnership to steady the New Zealand innings after the lost of the first four wickets. They had a 74-run stand going, propelling New Zealand towards a big total before Marco Jansen picked up his fourth wicket in the form of Mark Chapman. Daryl Mitchell followed Chapman soon and New Zealand were struggling to get a formidable total at the stage. The fall of wickets continued as New Zealand gradually fell apart. Jimmy Neesham and Mark Henry managed a 30-run partnership to take their team to 175/7 at the end of their 20 overs.

Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock have South Africa a rocking start. Both the batters looked to be aggressive from the beginning and New Zealand struggled to find a way back into the match. Lockie Ferguson picked up the first wicket in the form of Quinton de Kock, however, by then the duo had put together 61 runs in less than five overs.

South Africa did not lose the momentum even after the dismissal of Quinton de Kock as Aiden Markram looked in sublime touch. A couple of wickets fell from the other end, but there was no stopping Markram. He remained unbeaten on 86 off 44 balls as South Africa won the game by seven wickets with 17 balls remaining in the game.

New Zealand and South Africa don't usually meet in a group stage decider this early, but that is exactly what this Group D shootout at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad feels like: unbeaten vs unbeaten, with the winner virtually punching the first ticket out of the group and grabbing the psychological high ground heading into the next phase.
