Virgil van Dijk explains what has changed about Darwin Nunez at Liverpool since Arne Slot arrived

Liverpool have undergone a huge amount of change in recent months with the arrival of new manager Arne Slot.

The Dutch coach was selected to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield this summer with Slot getting off to a strong start in the hot seat at Liverpool, with the Reds currently top of the Premier League and already in top-eight of the UEFA Champions League league phase.

One of the key reasons behind Liverpool’s strong start to life under Slot has been the rapid improvement of a number of players, namely Ryan Gravenberch, who Jamie Carragher has already likened to Patrick Vieira this season.

Van Dijk says Nunez has become more calm at Liverpool under Slot

Speaking to the press, Van Dijk has highlighted how Nunez has become more calm since the arrival of Slot, with the Dutch manager spending time working on the Uruguay international and to get the best out of the striker.

Van Dijk said when asked about Nunez after Saturday’s win: “For him, coming into a club like Liverpool with that price tag, there is always going to be pressure to produce week in, week out and he is trying to do that but it is not always that easy.

“Now it is time for him to stay calm and I think, in my opinion, he has been doing that much better and the manager is busy with him a lot and us as players and we just have to keep him close to us and keep going. He started (against Bournemouth) but he might not start the next game and we want him to be consistent and keep doing it and doing it when he comes on and when he starts.

“That’s the main thing: don’t get dragged into the positivity and then the low of the negativity or you will be dizzy at a certain point. Consistency is the key. I think he shouldn’t get carried away – but he won’t – and now is the time for him to recover and focus on the next opportunity he gets. That’s football.”

Slot unlocking Nunez could be massive for Liverpool

Nunez is a striker who clearly has a lot of talent to succeed in the Premier League with Liverpool, with the forward’s goal this weekend against AFC Bournemouth a clear example of how good the former Benfica man can be.

And with Slot working to try and calm Nunez down, there’s a real chance that the Dutch coach could finally break through with the 25-year-old attacker and get the best out of the South American chaos merchant.

Indeed, Nunez still has time to become one of the best forwards in the Premier League with Liverpool, and Slot unlocking how to get more consistency out of the striker could be huge for the Reds this season.
