Luis Suárez scores two goals in Lewandowski's MLS debut against a Messi-less Inter Miami

A brace by Luis Suárez spoiled the debut with Chicago Fire of Poland's Robert Lewandowski in a Major League Soccer (MLS) match that ended in a 3-2 victory for Inter Miami.

The Florida team did not have Lionel Messi, who is resting in Argentina after losing in the World Cup final to Spain.

Luis Suárez celebrated his 100th match with Inter Miami, first by converting a penalty in the first half and then making it 2-1 in the second half.

Suárez's performance coincided with Lewandowski's first match for the Chicago Fire, the team he joined this summer after ending his spell with Barcelona.

The Pole, who will turn 38 in August, did not have a brilliant match and was substituted after an hour.

He was seen struggling to adapt to the faster and more chaotic pace of MLS, and made several angry gestures toward his teammates to urge them to stay calm and play short passes, instead of opting for the long ball and end-to-end chaos.

Just in case Lewandowski had any doubts about where he had landed, barely fifteen minutes were enough for him to realize it. A pass from an Inter Miami center-back to goalkeeper Rocco Rios Novo, today starting for only the second time this season, opened the scoring after the keeper swung at thin air and the ball rolled in slow motion into the net.

Although Chicago Fire equalized in the second half, and threatened to score a third, it was Inter Miami who took the victory thanks to a goal from academy product Preston Plambeck in the 85th minute.

Lewandowski will have to wait until August 1 to make his debut in front of his fans, but before that he will play away again this Saturday against New York City.

The Pole has not been the only star to arrive in MLS this summer. Frenchman Antoine Griezmann joined Orlando City, while Inter Miami announced this Wednesday the signing of Brazilian defensive midfielder Casemiro.

Messi returned to his hometown of Rosario after the World Cup, and Inter Miami has not announced the date on which he will rejoin the group alongside his compatriot Rodrigo De Paul.

With this result, Inter Miami remains in second place in the Eastern Conference with 34 points, ahead of Chicago Fire, third with 26, and with one game in hand.
