Manika Batra, Sreeja Akula out in group stage, India’s campaign ends

Paris 2024 Olympians Manika Batra and Sreeja Akula failed to progress beyond the group stage of the ITTF World Cup 2025 table tennis tournament after losing their respective matches in Macao on Wednesday.

Manika Batra and Sreeja Akula’s ouster also ended India’s campaign at the Table Tennis World Cup.

Manika Batra, 30th in the women’s singles table tennis rankings, lost against world No. 24 Bruna Takahashi of Brazil 3-1 (13-11, 11-8, 11-4, 10-12) in their Group 16 match.

Takahashi had also defeated the Indian table tennis player 4-3 in the first round of the 2021 World Championships in the two players’ only previous meeting.

Meanwhile, world No. 35 and Commonwealth Games gold medallist in mixed doubles Sreeja Akula was beaten 4-0 (11-8, 11-6, 11-9, 11-8) by Romania’s Bernadette Szőcs in Group 9.
