Who is Albert Mills, 17-year-old towering defender called up by Ruben Amorim to Man Utd training

The youngsters at Manchester United are unlikely to get much first-team action this season, but Ruben Amorim is making sure to keep them involved by calling them to first-team training, with Albert Mills the latest beneficiary.

Due to no European football and elimination from the Carabao Cup, even the senior players outside the first XI are having a hard time getting a look in.

Therefore, it was always impossible for the youngsters to break through, which has led to many reinventing themselves, like Amir Ibragimov.

Amidst all the call-ups to first-team training, Albert Mills can add his name to the list as the latest academy product to get a taste of senior training.

Who is Albert Mills

Albert Mills is a 17-year-old centre-back who joined the Man Utd U18s setup at the start of last season, having been in the development circuit before that.

Born in Norwich, Mills is a right-footed defender with physicality in spades and an ever-growing skillset.

Making appearances mainly for the U18s, he also played one game for the U21s last season and has become a regular this year.

He has played every minute of every league game so far for the U18s as Darren Fletcher’s young Red Devils made a promising start to the season.

He is generally positioned as the right-sided centre-back, and is a big part of why United U18s have conceded the fewest goals in the league so far.

Perhaps his call-up is a reward from Amorim for Mills’ ever-present form for the U18s, which is richly deserved.

Mills’ first-team prospects at Man Utd

While Mills will undoubtedly be encouraged after catching the eye of Amorim enough to earn a first-team call-up, his prospects of a debut are fairly distant.

United have a wealth of talent at the centre-back position, and despite Amorim needing three every game, the options are plenty at the senior level alone, let alone U18s or U21s.

Lisandro Martinez will return soon as well, further clogging up the path for central defenders in the academy.

For his part, Mills is still just 17, so he has plenty of time to hone his skills and start itching for a breakthrough.

He will turn 18 in February, so a loan move in the football league next summer will be a nice step into senior football for him.

Until then, he should maximise every second he has with the senior team, as mentors like Harry Maguire, Matthijs de Ligt, and Lisandro Martinez, just to name three, can give him quality education.
