Mikel Arteta agrees new Arsenal contract to extend stay

Mikel Arteta has agreed an improved new contract with Arsenal, committing his future to the Premier League champions after months of negotiations.

The 44-year-old's existing deal was due to expire at the end of the 2026-27 season, but an agreement has now been reached to extend his stay in north London. The length of the new contract has not yet been confirmed, although it is expected to take Arteta into at least his 10th year at the club.

Arteta took charge of Arsenal in December 2019 and has overseen a significant transformation during his six years at the Emirates Stadium. Last season, he guided the club to their first Premier League title in 22 years, having previously won the FA Cup and Community Shield.

Arsenal also reached the Champions League final last season, where they were beaten by Paris Saint-Germain on penalties.

The new agreement follows repeated indications from Arteta that he wanted to remain at Arsenal. Speaking before last weekend's trip to Brighton, he played down concerns over the negotiations.

"I think we are all very much aligned; whenever the time is right, we'll get that done. There is nothing to be concerned about."

Arteta added: "I think we both have the same ambition and the same will. So whenever we have time, we'll get that resolved."

The agreement comes after Arsenal made an unbeaten start to their Premier League title defence, winning their first four matches before losing 3-0 away to Brighton on 19 September. That defeat left them second in the table on 12 points from five matches, three points behind leaders Manchester City.

Arteta's new deal also provides continuity at a club that has undergone considerable rebuilding since his appointment. Arsenal finished as runners-up three times before finally ending their long wait for the league title last season.

With the contract agreement now reached, Arsenal are set to continue their long-term project under the manager who has overseen their return to the top of English football.
