Fabrizio Romano: 'Insane' Star Signs Five-Year Contract at Man Utd

Manchester United are close to announcing their second major signing of the summer, according to Fabrizio Romano - with Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo having 'just signed' his five-year deal with the option of a sixth year to become the Red Devils' latest signing.

United began the transfer window with a bang when they announced Wolverhampton Wanderers star Matheus Cunha, after activating his £62.5million release clause after a 15-goal campaign in the Premier League - but after a lowly 15th-placed finish, which was their lowest in Premier League history, more and more recruits are needed to at least push for European football next season.

But despite a lull period that has lasted almost six weeks in terms of bringing first-team players into their squad, United's second major signing is now 'done' in what will be a huge boost for Ruben Amorim.

The report by Romano states that Mbeumo has put pen to paper, with his medical being completed on Sunday morning - and the 'insane' star can now be considered their latest recruit after a saga that has lasted for weeks.

Mbeumo's intentions were clear last month when he chose United over a move to Tottenham Hotspur or Newcastle United, and although negotiations have dragged on, he's chosen Old Trafford as his favoured destination. That culminated in the Red Devils reaching an agreement with Brentford for his services, in a deal that will bring the Bees a guaranteed £65million, with an extra £6million in add-ons.

Mbeumo represents a top signing for United. He was one of just five players to score 20 or more goals in the Premier League last season, sitting alongside esteemed company including Mohamed Salah, Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak.

Goals are badly needed at United. Only Everton and the bottom three clubs who were relegated put the ball in the net fewer times than the Red Devils, and that will be something for Amorim to fix - but with a combined 35 goals between Mbeumo and Cunha, that problem appears to be fixed to an extent, despite a striker being needed to replace goal-shy Rasmus Hojlund after a poor campaign from the Dane.
