The Essendon Football Club can confirm that Lewis Hayes has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury to his left knee.

The unfortunate incident occurred during the third quarter of Saturday's round nine clash against Sydney at Marvel Stadium, where Hayes landed awkwardly in a marking contest.

The Club is deeply disappointed for Hayes, who was making his AFL debut.

"The entire Club has rallied behind 'Hayesy' since yesterday's game," Essendon General Manager - AFL Daniel McPherson said.

“His resilience and commitment to being his best have been evident since he joined us, and those qualities will undoubtedly give him the best possible chance to recover fully.

"We will ensure he has all the support he needs throughout this journey."

Hayes is scheduled to see a surgeon on Monday to determine the subsequent steps in his recovery, which will include surgery to repair the injured ligament.

Essendon will provide updates on Hayes' rehabilitation timeline following his consultation with the surgeon.
