Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced that the 2025 edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) will not take place this year as originally scheduled. The decision comes as the board shifts focus towards preparing for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, which Sri Lanka will co-host with India in February-March next year."As per the guidelines of the International Cricket Council (ICC), all host venues for the upcoming 20-team event must be in perfect condition to meet the demands of a major international competition," the SLC stated, explaining that the postponement will allow the board to prioritise comprehensive venue readiness. The focus will now be on enhancing stadium infrastructure, modernising player facilities, upgrading broadcast capabilities, and strengthening media centre amenities to meet global requirements.Currently, renovation work is underway at three international venues across the island. The R. Premadasa Stadium (RPS) in Colombo, which temporarily paused its redevelopment to host 11 matches of the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025, will resume its upgrades immediately after the conclusion of the tournament.SLC emphasised that the decision to postpone the LPL is a strategic one, aimed at delivering world-class facilities for the T20 World Cup and ensuring Sri Lanka's venues are fully equipped to host cricket's marquee events. The board, meanwhile, has assured that the LPL will be rescheduled in a more suitable window.
