Gary Neville spotted a glaring problem as Manchester United threw away a two-goal lead vs Liverpool.

Manchester United beat Liverpool 3-2 to secure Champions League football for next season, but the Red Devils made it more difficult than it needed to be.

Early goals from Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko put United in full control, but two basic errors from Amad Diallo and Senne Lammens let Liverpool back into the game.

Thankfully, Kobbie Mainoo scored the winner in dramatic fashion just days after signing a new contract. But United legend Gary Neville spotted a big problem that will give Michael Carrick food for thought.

Gary Neville complains about ‘dangerous’ Man Utd midfield

The only change that Carrick made at half-time was introducing Amad Diallo in place of goalscorer Sesko. Just minutes into the second half, Amad made a mistake that led to Liverpool’s first goal.

United were visibly shaken by the quickfire goals scored by Liverpool, and Carrick’s 4-2-3-1 shape quickly dissolved into chaos, specifically in midfield.

Mainoo and Casemiro were United’s midfield partnership, but they were often caught out of position and ahead of play.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville said: “I’m sure Carrick and Steve Holland are thinking about what they can do in that midfield where Liverpool are dominating.

“It would be dangerous to leave Mainoo and Casemiro in the midfield alone right now.”

Neville was far from pleased with United’s midfield organisation, and Carrick eventually brought on Patrick Dorgu to add more defensive structure to his side.

Man Utd midfield issue will be resolved next season

Casemiro is leaving United at the end of the season, and while it will be an emotional farewell, the midfield problems against Liverpool proved why it is necessary.

United will rebuild their midfield department in the upcoming summer transfer window, and an athletic, defensive midfielder is the top priority.

Elliot Anderson is United’s top target, while Carlos Baleba and Sandro Tonali are also being heavily linked.

Regardless of which top-class signing arrives, Mainoo’s new partner will be youthful and athletic. Casemiro’s biggest weakness is his pace and ability to cover ground quickly.

Neville’s concerns about the midfield are valid, but Ineos are already working to make sure it doesn’t exist in 2026/27.
