The World Cricketers’ Association ( WCPA ) has criticised the current global cricket schedule , labelling it as “broken, unsustainable, confusing, and chaotic.” In a significant move, the players’ union has announced an in-depth review of the calendar, signalling a growing discontent among cricketers with the demands placed on them.

The relentless proliferation of international and domestic T20 leagues has led to a congested fixture list, leaving players with little respite. The physical and mental toll of such a gruelling schedule has raised concerns about player burnout and injuries. Moreover, the overlapping of various tournaments has created a complex and confusing landscape for fans.

"The current model is broken and unsustainable," a WCA statement said on Monday.

"Confusing and chaotic global scheduling with no clarity on the interplay between international cricket and the domestic leagues means players are increasingly forced to choose between representing their country and optimising their careers."

"Change is badly needed to create ongoing clarity, and value, for players, boards and fans alike."

WCA chair Heath Mills added: "We are fortunate that cricket is spoilt for choice and has three core formats across both the international game and domestic leagues.

"To date, the game’s leadership has collectively failed to come together to establish a clear and coherent global structure in which they can co-exist. We have virtually given up hope of it doing so."

Research by the Professional Cricketers’ Association in May found that 81 per cent of players had concerns about the physical toll of the domestic fixture list with little time for proper rest and recovery.

England Test captain Ben Stokes, had spoken on the scheduling and said, “something that does need to be addressed”.

“Who knows what international cricket is going to look like, with all the franchise stuff that is going on as well. It does need to get looked at. I don’t think anyone can put their hand on their heart and know what cricket is going to look like in even two years’ time,” Stokes had said.
