Michael Carrick enjoyed the perfect start as Manchester United manager, beating Pep Guardiola's Manchester City 2-0 at Old Trafford on January 17.

Carrick hopes to prove there was no fluke about that result when United take on Enzo Maresca's City today.

The Citizens are clear favourites but United have been formidable opponents at Old Trafford in 2026 and backing over 3.5 goals could be the best bet.

The Red Devils won eight of their nine home league games after Carrick's appointment last season and it has been a similar story this term.

Their first two away results in the Premier League were a dismal 2-0 defeat at promoted Hull and a 2-2 draw at Everton, whose right-back Ainsley Maitland-Niles scored a spectacular late equaliser.

At home, though, United beat Ipswich 5-2 thanks to a Bruno Fernandes hat-trick and celebrated their return to the Champions League with a 4-0 win over Sabah of Azerbaijan.

Fernandes, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko were among the goalscorers on Thursday night.

Carrick also hailed Marcus Rashford's efforts while Bryan Mbeumo, another forward, scored against Ipswich and Everton.

United must raise their game against City but they have lost only one of the last six Manchester derbies, dating back to a shock 2-1 win under Erik ten Hag in the 2024 FA Cup final.

City were cut apart in August's 3-0 Community Shield defeat to Arsenal and needed two late goals to pinch a 2-1 home win over Bournemouth in their Premier League opener.

They were expected to demolish promoted Coventry at the Etihad last weekend but had only four shots on target in a 1-0 victory. However, their first away performance under Maresca was more expansive as Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki both scored braces in a 4-1 win at Crystal Palace.

And Tuesday's 2-0 Champions League victory away to Porto featured another eye-catching display from City.

Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa kept the scoreline respectable in a one-sided contest, with Maresca's men firing ten shots on target to their hosts' none.

The Manchester rivals both appear stronger going forward than they do in defence and both line up with new-look midfield units.

Carrick followed up January's win over City with a 3-2 victory at champions Arsenal. United's final two home wins of 2025-26 were also by a 3-2 margin, against Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, and Sunday's derby could be another cracker.

Dangerous Dalot should get shooting opportunities

With an open game expected at Old Trafford, United right-back Diogo Dalot is an enticing bet to have at least one shot.

The Portugal international was rested against Sabah on Thursday but had four attempts at goal in the home win over Ipswich and one in the draw at Everton.

Both teams to score

Manchester United have conceded six goals in three Premier League matches this season but they scored nine times in home wins over Ipswich (5-2) and Sabah (4-0).

Manchester United or draw double chance

United outclassed Manchester City in January's 2-0 win at Old Trafford and the Citizens have won only one of the last six Manchester derbies.

Enzo Fernandez to be shown a card

City new boy Fernandez was sent off for two bookable offences in the World Cup final and picked up 18 yellow cards in his last two Premier League seasons at Chelsea.
