Ruben Amorim encouraged by Man Utd response to Carabao Cup nightmare, ‘I really like…’

Manchester United are looking for their first win of the season when they take on Burnley in the Premier League.

It has been a difficult start to the season for Manchester United.

After losing to Arsenal and drawing against Fulham, the Red Devils crashed out of the Carabao Cup second round following a defeat on penalties against League Two side Grimsby Town.

The pressure is mounting on Ruben Amorim as a result, with former United legend Gordon Hill advising him to adopt a 4-4-2 formation and ditch his 3-4-2-1 system.

United fans will be eager to see a response from the players on the pitch, and it would help relieve some of the pressure that has been piled on Amorim.

Amorim has been speaking to United’s media team about the type of response he is demanding from his players when they take on Burnley.

Amorim demands first Premier League win of the season

There is only one way for Amorim to turn things around at Old Trafford. That is by winning football matches.

Unlike United, Burnley have won a game this season, after beating Sunderland 2-0 in the Premier League last weekend. They also knocked Derby County out of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, which means they’ve had one more day to prepare for the game.

United will be tasked with not only winning the match but showcasing a convincing performance because the Old Trafford faithful needs a lift following the disappointing midweek defeat against Grimsby Town.

Speaking ahead of the match, Amorim stressed that he has been encouraged by the players in training since they lost the penalty shootout 12-11 on Wednesday night.

“I really like the response from the players in training and we have to respond,” Amorim told MUTV.

“We have a responsibility. We want that first win in the Premier League in front of our fans and we have to get back to our standards because the result we cannot control. We saw that in the first two games.

“Especially in the first one, also in the first half in the second one. We show that we are a team that can win any game. We have to return to that standard, that is the most important thing for me.”

Amorim was then asked what is the best possible way to respond. He added: “The only way is to play well and to win games. We need to win games to have more confidence and maintain the level. For that, we have to control the small things.”

Familiar faces at Burnley

Two members of Burnley’s squad played for United in the past.

Firstly, Hannibal Mejbri became an academy graduate before moving to Turf Moor in 2024.

The Tunisia international is joined by former United loanee Martin Dubravka, who joined Burnley from Newcastle this summer.

Hannibal and Dubravka are both expected to start against United.
