Man Utd fans disagree with Rio Ferdinand backed Roberto de Zerbi for head coach role

Manchester United will make a decision in the coming weeks over the club’s next permanent head coach.

After sacking Ruben Amorim, Manchester United decided to take their time over the club’s next permanent appointment.

Amorim’s firing was not planned, so United’s decision to pivot has provided extra time to take stock – and for more contenders to become available.

The past 24 hours have seen developments, with Roberto de Zerbi departing his role as Marseille manager following a poor run of form.

De Zerbi’s Marseille were fourth in Ligue 1, but had won only one of their last five games in all competitions, eliminated at the Champions League group stage.

Manchester United fans reject Roberto de Zerbi

Roberto de Zerbi was named as one of two favourites to land the Manchester United job back in January, The Guardian’s Jamie Jackson told Sky Sports. The other name he mentioned was Thomas Tuchel.

Ineos’ high-regard for De Zerbi is dated back to their round of interviews in June 2024 when they were debating Erik ten Hag’s future.

De Zerbi has Premier League experience with Brighton, and plays an attacking playing style – but he also has a reputation for wanting to do things his own way, rather than adapt to Ineos’ preferred collaborative style.

United fans on TalkingPoints have given strong response on De Zerbi, flatly rejecting the possibility.

“No, he’s not better than Carrick,” one message read.

Another response noted: “No Carrick is far better suited to United.”

A third comment added: “NO he is not a good manager. Carrick is doing a good job than most of these so called established managers. Let’s stick with him.”

“Not keen on him at all,” read another message on our matchday feed.

Another fan pointed to his latest departure, commenting: “Why do we need somebody else’s cast off if Marseille sacking him he won’t be able to run Man Utd at all.”

De Zerbi landed only four per cent of votes in our poll over who is likely to be Manchester United head coach at the start of next season.

Rio Ferdinand was enthused about Roberto de Zerbi

Manchester United fans’ rejection of Roberto de Zerbi is in contrast to the views from club legend Rio Ferdinand.

Speaking last month, Ferdinand told his YouTube channel: “De Zerbi, whatever formation he wants to play, the guy is a proper coach who gets players working and playing.”

Speaking about the Italian’s reputation for being unpredictable, Ferdinand said it could be a positive.

“De Zerbi is a coach, I’d bring fire to the party, I wouldn’t bring craziness but I’d bring someone bringing fire and that passion, really really backed up by someone who has shown they can coach the life out of a team, improve players and put down a life of playing football.”
