Darwin Nunez has confessed that he becomes irate when he squanders opportunities in front of goal. The Uruguayan striker has seen a turnaround in his fortunes at Liverpool recently, following his promotion to the starting line-up due to an injury to Diogo Jota. After a rocky start under Arne Slot, Nunez has now netted two goals and provided an assist in recent matches.Nunez had a tough time making a mark in the initial months of the new season, with the 25-year-old only starting one match and scoring a single goal. Injuries to key forwards like Jota, and the continued absence of new recruit Federico Chiesa, have paved the way for Nunez to secure a regular spot in the Reds' starting lineup. His performances have now established him as a crucial player in Liverpool's recent surge to the top of the Premier League and Champions League league phase. The former Benfica forward netted Liverpool's opening goal in last weekend's crucial 2-0 victory over Aston Villa, and he was responsible for the lone goal in the 1-0 triumph over RB Leipzig. However, much to the frustration of the Anfield crowd, he has still been culpable of missing clear-cut chances. But he has admitted that his inconsistency in front of goal annoys him as much as it does the fans, as per the Liverpool Echo."It’s normal to get annoyed when you fail at scoring," Nunez told Telemundo after the win over Villa, which established Liverpool's five-point lead at the top of the table. "When I fail, I get angry at myself, but I keep working, learning from my mistakes. Nobody is perfect. I’m gonna keep working to help the team.Image: Carl Recine/Getty Images) Carl Recine/Getty Images)"If you don’t know how to deal with failure, the opportunities to score will disappear. You have to be consistent and keep trying."Amid speculation about a move to Barcelona, Nunez has made it clear where his loyalties lie, insisting: "I focus on Liverpool, not other teams. We have to keep working hard. I hope we can achieve our goal of winning the season. And I hope to celebrate it with the fans."Happy about the goal. Happy about the work we have been doing. This is teamwork. We have been doing a good job and we have to keep it going."Since joining the club, Slot has been vocal about Nunez's role, asserting ahead of the Bournemouth game earlier this season that his No. 27 would get more playing time if he continued to put in the effort during training sessions.Image: Getty Images) Getty Images)"There's a lot of confidence in him, but there are two players for that position and I could even come up with more, who could play in that position," Slot said. "He's in competition with Diogo, who's done really well. But many games have to be played and there will be enough time to judge Darwin, if he improves and how he improves and if he can do special things for the club."Nunez then scored in the Bournemouth win, netting his first goal of the season, clearly responding to Slot's motivational talk. The Uruguayan international is calm about his current time on the pitch however and claimed he is enjoying life under Liverpool's new head coach."The team has many good players," Nunez said. "Arne is doing a good job. When we get to play, even if it’s only 10-15 minutes, we do a good job because he is a good coach, positive and helpful."Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
