Chelsea preview: Woeful season

Xabi Alonso will arrive this summer but interim boss Calum McFarlane can still deliver European football for the Blues, albeit their form makes that extremely unlikely – with the off-field running of the club having contributed to a woeful campaign.

They were beaten 1-0 by Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium at the weekend, meaning that they have now managed just two victories – against Leeds United and Port Vale – in their last 12 matches across all competitions.

Tottenham preview: Stirred Spurs

West Ham United’s 3-1 defeat to Newcastle United at the weekend means that a Tottenham win here will ensure their survival but a point more or less does the same, too, such is their goal difference in comparison to the Hammers.

Spurs have found some much-needed improvement and form in the nick of time with a four-match unbeaten run of form under Roberto De Zerbi, albeit they were frustratingly held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds United last week.

Chelsea team news: Full strength

Throughout the last couple of years, there have been suggestions that the manager doesn’t have full authority at Chelsea with the lineup, with heavy influence from the sports and conditioning side of things.

Finally, though, they are in a position with few injuries and so, going out with a bang, McFarlane could name the Blues’ strongest eleven for this one.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Sanchez; James, Chalobah, Colwill, Cucurella; Caicedo, Fernandez; Neto, Palmer, Garnacho; Pedro

Unavailable: Derry (Injured), Estevao (Injured), Gittens (Injured), Mudryk (Disciplinary)

Tottenham team news: Crisis calming

Spurs have been without an almost comical amount of players this season but their injury crisis is subsiding a touch, albeit both Guglielmo Vicario and Dominic Solanke remain likely to be unavailable.

As well as those two, they still have key longer-term absentees such as defender Cristian Romero and attacking quartet Xavi Simons, Wilson Odobert, Mohammed Kudus and Dejan Kulusevski.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Kinsky; Porro, Danso, Van de Ven, Udogie; Palhinha, Bentancur; Kolo Muani, Gallagher, Tel; Richarlison

Unavailable: Romero (Injured), Simons (Injured), Odobert (Injured), Kudus (Injured), Kulusevski (Injured)

Questionable: Vicario (Injured), Solanke (Injured)

Chelsea vs Tottenham prediction

Reminiscent of ten years ago, we have a crucial game between a mid-table Chelsea side looking to ruin Tottenham’s season. That one saw reigning champions Chelsea try and succeed in ending Spurs’ title chances. This time, a shadow of that side try to push Spurs to the Championship. That day saw a proud Chelsea side with real quality fight for what their supporters wanted. It is a different situation now, though, and so siding with the visitors would appear a good bet for this one at Stamford Bridge, with just a point realistically required.
