Newcastle United scramble late deal over the line as Matthias Jaissle gets deadline day wish

Matthias Jaissle was eager to let Sean Neave go out and get some vital experience at a high level

Newcastle United got their deal for Sean Neave over the line just in time on deadline day as the young striker was put through his paces late last night for a medical with Championship promotion hopefuls Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 19-year-old Winlaton lad watched on as Wolves were beaten 4-2 by West Ham in a battle of the Championship heavyweights, but he will now be keen to help offer sharpness to the Molineux side's attack in the coming months. It's a deal that excites Neave and one that Matthias Jaissle was keen to get done given United's squad depth.

The young striker faces stiff competition for game time at Wolves, with former Newcastle striker Adam Armstrong and veteran forward Raul Jiminez among the attackers at their disposal, but it marks a challenge for the teenager to see how he can progress his game and learn on the job.

A Newcastle statement read: "Sean Neave has joined Championship club Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan for the 2026/27 season. Sean, who has represented England at Under-19 level, joined Newcastle's Academy as a 13-year-old and was part of the Magpies' 2025 Carabao Cup winning squad.

"The 19-year-old made his senior debut for the club in February 2026, featuring in a 6–1 UEFA Champions League win over Qarabag FK. On the final day of the 2025/26 campaign, he made his Premier League debut, coming off the bench against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

"He now joins Cesar Peixoto’s side who currently sit third in the Championship following a strong start to the season. Everyone at Newcastle United wishes Sean the very best for his loan spell at Molineux."

Executive Wolves chairman Nathan Shi said: “Sean is a talented player who Cesar and Matt both spoke to and were impressed by, and we believe he has a lot of potential to be successful with us. We are delighted to welcome him to Wolves, and he will have the full support of us all.

“We already have a lot of experience in that department with Raul and Adam, and we think signing a younger profile in Sean complements the group well for what we know will be a long and challenging Championship season.”

Technical director Matt Jackson said: “It was important to get a player of a certain type, who's looking to learn and bring a real hunger and personality to our group. He is very hard-working and a really technical player. His enthusiasm and drive to be a professional is what all young players should have.

“We presented to them, myself and Cesar together, and it’s great to have that support. It shows the buy-in with the recruitment process. I'd like to think that resonated with Sean, his representatives and the senior representatives from Newcastle.

“It works when you can offer a project that really stimulates the player but also satisfies the needs of the football club. We look forward to being a part of Sean's journey and we’re delighted to welcome him here.”

Neave had told Chronicle Live earlier in the year: "There was a thought for me to go on loan in January. But they decided to keep me here and be in and around the team which I was OK with, I was happy. We will see what happens. And next season, look at it again."
