Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has made his stance clear on the contentious penalty awarded to his former club during their draw with Manchester City.

Anthony Gordon won a penalty for Newcastle after a clash with City's Ederson, who received a yellow card in the incident at St James' Park. Gordon successfully converted the spot-kick, negating Josko Gvardiol's earlier goal for City.

The decision sparked debate, with many suggesting the goalkeeper had a right to feel aggrieved, echoing an outcry similar to last season's penalty incident involving Liverpool's Diogo Jota against Newcastle, a situation for which Shearer had strong words for.

One football fan highlighted the comparison and called Shearer out for consistency on Twitter, posting: "There's literally no contact and if there is it's less then Jota's was. Same energy @alanshearer, it just looks better still could have stayed on his feet." Shearer didn't shy away from responding.

Quoting the tweet, he clarified his position with a succinct comment. "I didn't think it was a pen. That ok?" he wrote, reports the Mirror.

On Premier League Live, Shearer reiterated his belief that Newcastle were fortunate to get the penalty, suggesting Gordon engineered the situation due to a poor first touch.

"I'm delighted it was given from a Newcastle perspective but I didn't think it was a penalty," he expressed. "Gordon has taken a heavy touch and he's never getting anywhere near that ball and he realises. If there's a touch it's a tiny touch and he initiates the touch Gordon. I think Newcastle got really lucky, I didn't think it was a penalty at all."

"His touch is awful and once he knows he can't get his touch, his second thought is how do I try and get a penalty," he continued. "So many players do it. We see it all of the time and we'll see another 10 or 20 players doing that."

Despite critics hoping for VAR intervention to rule out the penalty, the Premier League's Match Centre did provide an explanation as to why Ederson was not shown a red card during the incident.

They explained: "The referee [ Jarred Gillett] awarded a penalty for a foul by Ederson on Anthony Gordon. He issued a yellow card to Ederson after he deemed his actions were a genuine attempt to play the ball but denied an obvious goal scoring opportunity. The VAR [ Paul Tierney] checked and confirmed the referee's call of penalty and a yellow card to Ederson."
