When is the next World Cup game?

After what's been full-throttle soccer for 27 consecutive days at the 2026 World Cup, the tournament comes to a halt on Wednesday, July 8. There will be no World Cup games being played as the eight remaining squads continue preparations for the quarterfinals.

Fortunately for fans, the wait will be brief before the quarterfinals kick off Thursday, July 9. And awaiting on the other end of the hiatus is a doozy of a matchup: France vs. Morocco in a rematch of the 2022 World Cup semifinal, won by France.

After the elimination of Egypt in an epic round of 16 match against Argentina, Morocco is the last African nation remaining in the World Cup. While Morocco was a surprise semifinalist in 2022, The Atlas Lions' advancement this year was an expected development (though the team did have to survive a penalty shootout against the Netherlands in the round of 32 to get here).

After outscoring their first four opponents 13-2, France had to survive a 1-0 rock fight against Paraguay to reach the quarterfinals. Kylian Mbappe's penalty was the difference in the round of 16 win as the Les Bleus star remained in the thick of a transcendent Golden Boot race.

Morocco, meanwhile, will hope their key striker, Ismael Saibari, will be able to play Thursday.

Where will France vs Morocco game be played?

The France vs. Morocco quarterfinal will be played at Gillette Stadium (known as Boston Stadium for the duration of the 2026 World Cup) in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Gillette Stadium is the regular home stadium for the NFL's New England Patriots and New England Revolution of MLS. The "House that Tom Brady Built" (not an official moniker) opened in 2002 and has hosted many famous American football games, including seven AFC championship games (the Patriots went 6-1 in those games). The stadium also has hosted numerous soccer matches, including four during the 2003 women's World Cup, as well as the 2002 MLS Cup. After hosting six group stage matches and Paraguay's round of 32 win over Germany, the France-Morocco quarterfinal will be the final 2026 World Cup match at Gillette Stadium.
