Greatest final ever? WILD scenes in Global Super League as Peter Siddle heroics in vain in all time cricket classic

The Caribbean-based Global Super League has produced perhaps the most extraordinary final in cricket history.

Guyana Amazon Warriors won the title despite being bowled out for just 85, with opponents San Francisco Unicorns falling six runs short in a thrilling, bizarre run chase.

At 41 years old, Peter Siddle wound back the years to take three wickets for the Unicorns, before doing his best to haul them over the line with the bat with an unbeaten 13 featuring a huge six.

But teammate Callum Stow, a Victorian who has played six games for the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League and for Victoria in the Marsh Cup, was run out attempting a risky single to end the Unicorns’ innings on 79.

The run out sparked wild scenes as the Warriors celebrated one of the most remarkable wins in T20 history.

“The Warriors are going berserk!” commentator Danny Morrison exclaimed.

The Warriors’ 85 is the lowest score ever successfully defended in a professional T20 final.

Even more remarkably, they had slumped to 8/29 less than nine overs into the innings after an early burst from Siddle routed a strong top order featuring West Indies internationals Johnson Charles and Shimron Hetmyer, as well as Afghanistan regulars Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Mohammad Nabi.

Nearly 18 years since making his Test debut for Australia, Siddle’s accuracy and movement off the pitch were too much for Charles, Hetmyer and Mohammad Haris.

He would finish with 3/18 off his four overs to, seemingly, have steered the Unicorns to a thumping victory.

But when New Zealand international Tim Robinson edged player of the match Dwaine Pretorius behind off the first ball of the run chase, it triggered a staggering collapse.

Only Aussie young gun Oliver Peake (31 off 28 balls) provided any resistance, with the Unicorns going from a strong position at 3/53 to disaster at 8/58.

Siddle’s arrival threatened to take them home, but the veteran would be left unbeaten on 13 not out with the bat, having done everything he could to weather the storm.

The Victorian, somehow, wasn’t even close to the oldest person on the field.

Warriors captain Imran Tahir, at 47, would prove crucial with figures of 2/16 from his four overs, with the former South African leg-spinner also hitting 11 crucial runs with the bat as part of a final-wicket stand of 15 that would prove to be match-winning.

Launched in 2024, the Global Super League is an invitiational T20 competition in Guyana, which invites between five and six teams from tournaments around the world.

A Perth Scorchers XI was among the teams competing in the 2026 edition, though they would finish last with just one win from their four group stage games.
