Liverpool latest: Arne Slot handed sack ultimatum as manager 'open' to taking Reds job

The latest Liverpool news sees Arne Slot delivered a verdict on his future while one of Europe's premier managers supposedly makes a claim for the Reds job

Liverpool are believed to be satisfied with retaining under-pressure manager Arne Slot for next season. The Reds' Dutch manager astonished the footballing world by securing the Premier League title during his first season at Anfield.

His title defence went awry, with Liverpool suffering 20 defeats this season and ending the campaign in fifth place. There has been considerable speculation surrounding Slot's future, with numerous candidates reportedly being considered, should Fenway Sports Group decide to dismiss the Dutchman.

Today's Liverpool news sees one prominent manager allegedly expressing interest in the Liverpool position. Meanwhile, a Reds legend has advised Slot on what he needs to do to retain his role at L4.

Andoni Iraola 'open' to Liverpool switch

Andoni Iraola is reportedly open to taking the Liverpool job after confirming his departure from Bournemouth this summer. The 43-year-old has been linked with numerous top-flight opportunities since his exit from the Vitality Stadium was announced towards the close of this season.

It's understood that Liverpool have no plans to part company with Slot at present, however. Sky Sports report Iraola had begun talks with Italian giants AC Milan, though discussions are said to have subsequently broken down, with the Spaniard reportedly holding reservations.

He has also caught the eye of Crystal Palace, with Oliver Glasner poised to leave Selhurst Park. Iraola is additionally understood to be open to a move to Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen.

However, Sky have reported that Iraola has been forthright with both AC Milan and Palace regarding his desire to take charge at one of Europe's elite clubs. Sources indicate he remains available, and possibly optimistic, about the prospect of joining Liverpool - should Slot be dismissed this summer.

Slot ultimatum

Liverpool legend Jamie Redknapp reckons Slot must begin next season with a string of victories or risk serious repercussions. Redknapp feels Slot has been judged unfairly at times, but recognises the frustration pouring out of Anfield following such a disappointing campaign.

"Liverpool fans, in terms of a fan base, understand the game [really well], for me there's no one better and I totally get their frustration with the football this year that's been served up," Redknapp said. "It hasn't been good enough, been too slow, pedestrian but I would also say there's a lot of mitigating circumstances.

"Liverpool won [the Premier League] a year after [Jurgen Klopp left] and when people say, 'Well, Slot won it with Klopp's team', but Klopp didn't win it with that team. So that's a little bit unfair.

"I think you've just got to trust the club, because Arne will need a little bit of help next year, because if Liverpool don't start well, he knows the price on the ticket, the pressure will come on him very early, because of what's happened this season. And Arne knows that, but I think my feeling is he deserves a bit more respect."
