Harvey Elliott blow confirmed as Liverpool winger could face new loan nightmare

Liverpool loanee Harvey Elliott could be facing a repeat of his last nightmare loan spell following a huge Valencia decision

Harvey Elliott could be facing a loan nightmare at Valencia after they sacked Carlos Corberan as head coach. The Spanish club are yet to win in La Liga this season having lost four of their opening five games while also only scoring one goal.

The 23-year-old has made two substitute appearances since arriving on a temporary basis with his debut coming in a 5-0 home defeat to Barcelona. Valencia were narrowly beaten by Sevilla on Friday evening and that was enough to see Corberan and other figures removed from their roles.

A club statement read: "Valencia CF announces that it has decided to terminate its contractual relationship with the CEO of Football, Ron Gourlay, as well as with the members of his team, Lisandro Isei, Hans Gillhaus, Andrés Zamora and Malek Shafei.

"Furthermore, Valencia CF has terminated the existing contract with Carlos Corberán and his first team coaching staff.

"Carlos Corberan arrived at Valencia CF in December 2024 with the aim of leading the sporting project in a complex situation that he was able to reverse, and he has performed his duties with professionalism, passion and maximum commitment throughout 72 official matches.

"The club thanks the coach and all members of his coaching staff for their performance during their time leading the team. The club will soon announce the new structure of the football area and the configuration of the next sporting project."

Elliott was just starting to see his role emerge, following a difficult start where he was slammed by the Spanish media, when Corberan was dismissed. At the time talks between the two clubs were ongoing, it was reported that he had spoken directly to Elliott to make him aware of his role in the team.

The former Aston Villa loanee now faces the huge task of making an impression on the next coach who comes in and he could find himself struggling for game-time for the second consecutive season.

A similar problem plagued the loan of Arsenal star Ethan Nwaneri last season at Marseille with Roberto De Zerbi, who brought him to the club, dismissed just a few weeks after he joined.

Elliott will be hoping he avoids that nightmare scenario especially after having nine months of his career wasted at Villa last season. He opened up on that spell in Birmingham earlier this year and admitted he had no bad feelings towards Unai Emery and Co.

“Unfortunately, it didn't work out, but the way I see it is that's last season now, I'm here. It's kind of a second chance, if you want to call it.

"Whatever happened last season, I wish Villa nothing but the very best, had a lot of love for them, and they treated me very, very well. Unfortunately, the situation happened, but It's another learning curve.

“It's a situation that I can take on in my career, and just keep looking forward. I'm here now, and I'm trying to cement my spot in the team or within the squad."
