PCB to introduce new auction concept in PSL after IPL’s success, move away from draft system

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is planning a new system called a “drauction” for the Pakistan Super League (PSL). This comes as the board looks to move away from the current player draft system, inspired by the success of auctions in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

According to PTI, the PSL Governing Council met with all eight franchise owners in Lahore on Friday and agreed to try out the “drauction” system for selecting both local and foreign players. The PCB has not explained exactly how it will work, but an insider said it might keep a draft system for local players while using an auction for overseas players.

The IPL introduced the auction system for the first time in its inaugural season in 2008. Since then, it has become a key part of the league, with teams and fans eagerly waiting for it before the start of every season to see how their squads shape up. A mega auction is held every two years, allowing teams to completely reshape their squads.

Several other franchises around the world have also adopted the auction model, looking at the IPL’s success. Pakistan, on the other hand, follow a lottery draft system, which is taken straight out of the book of big American sports league such as the National Football League, National Basketball League, and Major League Baseball.

PSL franchises divided over auction

Now, some PSL franchises are reportedly in favour of an auction, saying it will allow them to compete for foreign players who remain unsold in the IPL, as the PSL now happens in the same window. Others are worried that an auction could stretch their finances, as the current USD 1.3 million player purse may not be enough.

Meanwhile, the meeting also confirmed that the 11th edition of the PSL will start on March 26. The council discussed the schedule and venues for the upcoming tournament as well. The IPL 2026 is also scheduled to begin on March 26 and run until May 31.
