Liverpool are targeting a first Premier League win under Andoni Iraola on Friday, when they travel to promoted Ipswich.

Andoni Iraola failed to win any of his first nine Premier League matches as Bournemouth manager after taking over from Gary O'Neil in June 2023.

Bookmakers do not expect Iraola's winless start as Liverpool boss to last that long as the Reds are hot favourites to beat O'Neil's Ipswich at Portman Road.

However, Liverpool may have to overcome some familiar defensive deficiencies if they are to take three points against their promoted hosts.

They scraped a 2-2 draw at Newcastle thanks to Dominik Szoboszlai's injury-time penalty and fell behind twice in last weekend's Anfield draw with Nottingham Forest.

France winger Bradley Barcola, Liverpool's big summer signing, arrived late in the transfer window while Cody Gakpo was reportedly frustrated that his deadline-day move to Manchester City broke down.

Iraola inherited a team who kept one clean sheet in their last 11 league games under Arne Slot and there is no sign of defensive improvement yet.

Backing Liverpool to win and both teams to score looks the best bet on Friday as big-spending Ipswich have made a promising start to their latest crack at the top flight.

O'Neil replaced promotion-winning manager Kieran McKenna in the summer and Burnley striker Zian Flemming became Town's 14th signing of the window on deadline day.

The Tractor Boys made hard work of securing automatic promotion from the Championship but Jack Clarke's late goal gave them a vital 2-1 home victory over Sunderland on the opening weekend.

Things were looking even better for the Suffolk side when they led Manchester United late in the first half at Old Trafford last weekend.

But a Bruno Fernandes hat-trick inspired the Red Devils to a 5-2 win and Ipswich's defence may struggle against a Liverpool attack led by Alexander Isak.

The Sweden striker's first season at Anfield was ruined by injury but he scored against Forest last weekend and should be looking forward to playing alongside Barcola and Spanish winger Victor Munoz.

Iraola has plenty of issues to solve, from protecting a vulnerable back four to unlocking the potential of Florian Wirtz – a £116 million signing last summer.

Liverpool are already four points behind Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea although their individual quality should be too much for Ipswich.

The underdogs can get on the scoresheet – both teams have notched in all five of Ipswich and Liverpool's games this season – but Iraola should celebrate a welcome win before Wednesday's Champions League opener against Atletico Madrid.

Back Fatawu to trouble Reds' full-backs

Ipswich winger Abdul Fatawu scorched past Luke Shaw to set up Leif Davis's opener at Old Trafford and he looks a big price to claim another assist on Friday.

Fatawu, still only 22, is an exciting signing for the Tractor Boys, having racked up 20 assists in two Championship campaigns for Leicester.

Ipswich vs Liverpool Bet Builder

Both teams to score

Ipswich lost 5-2 at Manchester United last weekend and there were goals at both ends in 12 of Liverpool's last 13 Premier League matches.

Sasa Lukic to be booked

The combative midfielder received 21 yellow cards in his last two seasons at Fulham and was booked in Ipswich's defeat at Old Trafford.

Victor Munoz to have two or more shots

The Spanish winger scored Liverpool's second equaliser against Nottingham Forest and averaged 2.4 shots per 90 minutes for Osasuna in La Liga last season.
