Manchester United's left-wing plans are taking shape amid transfer truce and first-team promise

Man United wanted to sign a left-winger this summer but the prospect is beginning to look unlikely as pre-season heats up.

Manchester United's summer transfer business has focused almost exclusively on the midfield so far, but plans are starting to take shape elsewhere, and that includes on the left wing.

That position has been a focus at Old Trafford since the final weeks of the Ruben Amorim reign. United had conversations with Antoine Semenyo in December about a future in which he would play on the left, only for Semenyo to sign for Manchester City instead in a £62.5million deal.

During January, the plan remained to look at the left wing in the summer, something Michael Carrick himself hinted at in early March, when he said it was "definitely something to look at".

In the early weeks of 2026, Yan Diomande was a player of interest to United, but the 19-year-old's stock continued to rise and RB Leipzig have stuck a price tag of more than £100million on him. Diomande wants to move to Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

There have been other options for United. They are long-term admirers of Morgan Rogers but made no attempt to rival Chelsea for his signature before they agreed an eye-watering £117million deal, and considered a bid for Crysencio Summerville as well.

Roma have now had two offers for the Netherlands international rejected by West Ham and reports suggest a third is on the way. There has been no indication that United will try to rival the Serie A side for the 24-year-old.

In fact, the chances of a senior left-wing signing at Old Trafford this summer are receding, and there could be two key reasons for that.

The first is Marcus Rashford's situation. The 28-year-old is now enjoying a post-World Cup break, but is set to return to pre-season training with United around August 10, when Michael Carrick's side embark on a short training camp in Ireland. Rashford will be available for selection in pre-season.

As it stands, the chances of a move away from his boyhood club appear slim. Both sides have made conciliatory noises, and there are signs of a truce in the air. The door appears shut on a move to Barcelona and Rashford has little interest in moving to a Premier League club without the offer of Champions League football.

If he does remain at United, that will mean Carrick has three left-wingers at his disposal. Patrick Dorgu played there only three times under the new head coach in the second half of last season, but made a considerable impression and said at the weekend he was ready to make that position his own.

Then there is Matheus Cunha, who offers a different profile to the more direct running of Dorgu and Rashford, but played on the left last season when Dorgu missed four months with a hamstring injury.

With Dorgu, Cunha and Rashford available, and without the financial boost of selling Rashford and offloading his £325,000-a-week wages, there is little chance of United signing a senior left-winger.

But senior is the keyword there, because they have spent up to £8million on 18-year-old left-winger Tynan Thompson from Tottenham, with half of that fee up front and the other half in add-ons, which are dependent on first-team progress.

Thompson scored seven goals in seven games in the UEFA Youth League last season and is highly rated in academy circles. Part of the attraction of a move to United is that he has been shown a pathway into the first team, as fellow Londoner Ayden Heaven was when he signed from Arsenal in January 2025.

Thompson is expected to train with the first team this summer and will get opportunities in pre-season. Signing another left-winger now will only block Thompson's potential route to the team.

So as it stands, the youngster can expect to compete with Dorgu, Cunha and Rashford next season, and unless something changes in Rashford's situation, that is unlikely to change.
