The Football Association of Wales is proud to announce that Independent Chair, Alys Carlton, has won the ‘NED to Watch’ category at the prestigious NED Awards 2026.

Organised by Peel Hunt in partnership with The Sunday Times, the awards recognise outstanding non-executive leadership across the United Kingdom and are widely regarded as a benchmark for excellence in governance and board-level impact.

The 2026 ceremony, which marked the 20th anniversary of the awards, took place at Claridge’s in London, where Carlton was recognised for her exceptional contribution to the FAW and her impact within the wider governance landscape.

Since being appointed as FAW Independent Chair in 2023, Carlton has played a central role in strengthening governance, supporting strategic delivery and guiding the organisation through a period of continued growth and transformation.

Her leadership has reinforced the FAW’s commitment to modern, transparent and inclusive governance, aligning the Association with best practice across both sport and wider UK institutions.

Bringing a distinguished background in corporate law, leadership coaching and board-level advisory work, Carlton has introduced a strong independent perspective to the FAW Board. Her approach reflects the evolving landscape of football governance, where independent oversight, strategic challenge and long-term thinking are essential to sustainable success both on and off the pitch.

This national recognition also highlights the FAW’s continued progress in developing a diverse, skills-based Board that supports the ambitions of Welsh football at every level.

The NED Awards celebrate individuals who provide exceptional support and challenge to executive teams while driving strong governance and long-term value.

Carlton’s achievement places the FAW alongside leading organisations from across the UK’s corporate and public sectors, underlining the Association’s growing reputation for excellence beyond the pitch.

The FAW congratulates Alys Carlton on this outstanding achievement.
