A 16-year-old Aussie has announced herself to the tennis world with a stunning upset on the opening day of the Adelaide International.

Taking on world No.37 Xinyu Wang, wildcard Emerson Jones put in a world-beating performance to seal a straight-sets 6-4, 6-0 win.

She twice rallied from a break down in the first set and then from 40-0 down in the 10th game to take the first set before a second-set shut-out.

"That's massive ... the biggest victory of her very short career so far," Josh Eagle said in commentary for Nine.

It was the world No.371's first victory against a player ranked inside the top-100.

"I'm actually pretty surprised, pretty shocked," she said in her courtside interview.

"I didn't think I'd even get a wildcard for this tournament, so winning a round is pretty special.

"Sometimes I get a bit ahead of myself, so today I was trying to focus on each point and not get ahead of myself.

"The message (from my team) was no pressure, go out and play my best because I wasn't expected to win."

The world No.1 junior, Jones enjoyed a breakout 2024. She reached two junior grand slam finals at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and won the junior world finals.

She's the first Aussie woman since Jelena Dokic in 1998 to become junior No.1.

She will next face compatriot Olivia Gadecki or No.3 seed Daria Kasatkina.
