Serena Williams returns: Legendary tennis star will make comeback playing doubles at HSBC Championships

In 2022, Serena Williams announced she was “evolving away” from tennis. But four years later, it turns out the tennis legend still has at least one more event in her.

Williams, now 44, will return to the game in June, taking part in a doubles match at the HSBC Championships.

Williams confirmed the news, putting out a short teaser video hinting at her return. In the video, Williams’ phone can be heard chiming multiple times as she walks across the tennis court to pick it up. As she gets near the phone, the screen goes black, and the words “guess everybody heard the news” pops up.

She also released a statement confirming her return, stating the HSBC Championships were the perfect place for her to return.

“Queen’s Club feels like the perfect place to begin this next chapter,” Williams said in a statement.

“Grass has given me some of the most meaningful moments of my career, and I’m excited to be back competing on one of the sport’s most iconic stages.”

The HSBC Championships begin Monday, June 8. It’s unclear exactly when Williams will play in her first match, as draws have not been made for the event just yet. Draws won’t be revealed until three days before play gets underway.

Since Williams has been away from the game for years, she’ll enter the HSBC Championships as a doubles wild card. She’ll partner up with Canadian Victoria Mboko at the event.

Williams has not announced any plans beyond the HSBC Championships, though the event would give her a solid warmup for Wimbledon, arguably her best Grand Slam tournament … though it’s tough to choose considering her dominance.
