Man Utd still in talks to complete transfer deal after failed deadline day move

Manchester United failed to make a single signing on transfer deadline day, with one particular deal collapsing late on, and talks to agree terms are continuing

Leicester City and Manchester United are still in talks over Louis Page despite being unable to agree on the terms of a deal during transfer deadline day.

Hopes of him moving to the Premier League effectively ended when Russell Martin included his midfielder in their starting XI for a League One match on the same night against Plymouth Argyle. Page, 18, had previously missed their opening match of the season. He will now be staying until at least January.

United, however, are said to remain confident of signing the England under-19 international. Page made 18 Championship appearances last season.

Our sister title the Manchester Evening News reports that lines of communication remain open between the two clubs. They understand that their issue earlier in the week concerned payment terms for the initial fee that Leicester City would receive, as well as the makeup of the add-ons.

OPINION

It is understood that the League One club wanted a fee in excess of the £10million plus £2.5million in add-ons deal that Manchester City agreed for Jeremy Monga. A deal which would have seen Page stay at Leicester for the remainder of this season was understood to be close before the 11pm deadline.

Arsenal have been credited with an interest in the midfielder. However, he is said to be sold on the pathway and vision that United presented.

Page's father, Don, was born in Manchester, and they still apparently have family in the area. Like his son, Page Sr was a footballer, playing for several teams in Greater Manchester, including Altrincham, Hyde United, Rochdale and Wigan Athletic.

Martin acknowledged after Tuesday's match that Leicester rejected a bid from United on deadline day. He said: "The owner (Aiyawatt 'Top' Srivaddhanaprabha) was here today [and] we sat in the office and received a very big offer from Manchester United.

"Myself, Jon [Rudkin] (chief football officer), James [McCarron] (sporting director) and the owner, Khun Top, sat in [the office] and he said no.

"So whatever's going on with the noise around the club and all that stuff, he was strong, and he wanted the player to stay and be part of us. It would have been so easy for him to sell Louis and take a lot of money, but he didn't.

"It's a brilliant thing for us. Louis, you can see the level of quality and potential he possesses is amazing. He's really helped us since coming into the team. I'm really grateful that he's still here."
