Martina Navratilova raises concerns for Nick Kyrgios after his defeat at the Australian Open.

Before his 2025 return, the 29-year-old was limited to just one singles match since October 2022 following a nightmare run of injuries.

He made a comeback at the Brisbane International before resuming his Grand Slam career at Melbourne Park.

But his latest campaign was short lived and following an opening round defeat, Nick Kyrgios questioned his future in the sport.

What question does Martina Navratilova have for Nick Kyrgios after he addresses his tennis future?

Nick Kyrgios took on Jacob Fearnley in the opening round of the Australian Open.

Despite the crowd’s best efforts to give him extra encouragement, Kyrgios was unable to cause the Brit any sustained damage.

He even took a medical timeout during the contest, but former World number 13 ultimately ultimately succumbed to a 6-7(3), 3-6, 6-7(2) defeat.

Kyrgios said during his post-match press conference that he may have played his last match at the Australian Open. This prompted Martina Navratilova to ask if Kyrgios has the work ethic and desire to return to his best level of tennis.

“I mean this is again that quote from Ivo Jovic. Mental toughness is working hard even when the results aren’t there. Nick apparently had been working pretty hard getting to this point,” Navratilova told the Tennis Channel Live podcast.

“Will he keep that mentality and stay tough and work hard and try and get back to the top level he was at? Or is it just too far away from him, we’ll see.

Nick Kyrgios turns attention to doubles after Australian Open singles exit

After a disappointing exit from the singles event, Kyrgios now shifts this focus towards playing doubles at the Australian Open.

Kyrgios will reunite with compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis to try and win their second doubles title at Melbourne Park.

They will take on their fellow Australians Aleksandar Vukic and James Duckworth in their opening match of the campaign.

“I mean, realistically I can’t really see myself probably playing singles again here,” Kyrgios told reporters after the defeat.

“It was special. Look, I knew that I have doubles, so I kind of was taking everything in tonight in those moments. It was nuts.

Regarding Kokkinakis’ doubles partnership with Kyrgios, he added: “I think both of us made a pact on that, unless we are seriously hurt, we’re going to try to come out there – even if we’re not feeling great,” he said.

“That’s one thing, we can rely on each other and play. We don’t know what we’re going to produce out there, but for sure, we are going to take the court.”
