Danny Rohl wants Rangers stars to banish startling Russell Martin claim as he issues major demand

The new boss is looking to make an instant impact after replacing Martin amid a nightmare season

New boss Danny Rohl wants "bold and brave decisions" from his Rangers players amid lingering questions over the mentality of the squad.

Rohl's predecessor Russell Martin wasn't shy in taking a swipe at the Ibrox squad and during his disastrous 17-game stint, the former Southampton boss would consistently take a swipe at the "mentality" of the squad.

After defeat to Hearts, Martin would take things a step further and declare his players were "scared" to play in front of the Ibrox crowd.

But Rohl - who will take charge of his first game in the Europa League against Brann on Thursday night - has demanded his players show bravery.

Speaking to TNT Sports, he said: "I'm a manager who likes to make bold and brave decisions, on and off the pitch. This is important to understand, and this is what I want to see from my team as well.

"If we go on the pitch we have to be brave and not scared, because if you're scared then it's difficult to play attacking football.

"I want to improve the players on the football side but also on the human side because I still believe if you're a good human being, you have a good mindset and have belief."

While Rohl's only managerial experience came at Sheffield Wednesday, he has coached alongside some elite coaches at RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich, the German national team and Southampton.

The 36-year-old insists he has taken lessons from each experience: "As a manager you will learn every day.

"I learned something about my team today and tomorrow I will learn something about my players from the match. From my previous managers I learned different things.

"Hansi showed me a lot about leading a group, and leading big players, how you have to handle this, how you have to feel them.

"From Ralf Rangnick I learned about the idea how you want to play, intensity, pressing, transition moments.

"From Ralph Hasenhuttl I took some parts of how you can build up relationships with supporters, the people around you. I think this is a big part of us and if you bring them together you create a good environment."
