Everton take on Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday and Toffees boss David Moyes is hoping for a positive result against his former club.

Everton fans must be sick of hearing about the record-breaking summer of Premier League spending as the Toffees prepare to face Manchester United on Sunday.

Manager David Moyes will have to make do and mend, at least until January, after a dismal deadline day for the Merseysiders.

Losing star winger Iliman Ndiaye to Manchester City was a big blow, compounded by Everton's failure to land Monaco striker Folarin Balogun.

That leaves Thierno Barry as Everton's only senior centre-forward, undermining Moyes's hopes of building on a solid start to the campaign.

His side beat Crystal Palace 2-0 in their opening home game, thrashed Preston 4-0 in the EFL Cup – with Barry scoring a hat-trick – and claimed a creditable 1-1 draw at Bournemouth last weekend.

However, Moyes's former club United are only a shade of odds-against to take three points at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

For all the gloom at Everton, United look short enough, particularly as they lost 2-0 at ante-post relegation favourites Hull on their first away trip of the campaign.

Michael Carrick's men had to come from behind in last weekend's 5-2 home victory over promoted Ipswich, firing 33 shots at their opponents' goal.

They had a patchy away record under Ruben Amorim and Carrick last season, winning 1-0 at Everton in February thanks to a late Benjamin Sesko goal.

Unlike Sunday's hosts, United have splashed the cash although midfielder Carlos Baleba, their biggest summer signing, will not be available for another couple of weeks.

The Red Devils revamped their attacking unit last summer, bringing in Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, who scored the fifth goal in their win over Ipswich.

The Cameroon international also hit the bar from close range after Marcus Rashford smashed the ball across goal and he looks a good bet to score against Everton.

Mbeumo has had nine shots in his first two league outings, having scored 31 goals in 69 Premier League starts for Brentford and United in the last two seasons.

Playing alongside Bruno Fernandes is a huge boost to any forward and Mbeumo's goal against Ipswich was set up by the newly-crowned PFA Player of the Year.

Fernandes, who scored a hat-trick last weekend, may well inspire his team to another win but there are enough doubts over United's defence to swerve the favourites.

Tough-tackling Toffee should get stuck in

Moyes has denied reports that Everton turned down a late Chelsea bid for James Garner and the midfielder should play an important role for the Toffees on Sunday.

Garner, who came through United's youth system, is well worth backing to receive a card.

He was booked 12 times in the league last term and picked up another caution at Bournemouth last weekend.
