But with India playing a T20 World Cup semifinal at the iconic Wankhede Stadium - a venue close to his heart - Dhoni made it a point to drop by and cheer the boys.Soon enough, the television cameras spotted him in conversation with Rohit Sharma. With two Indian captains in attendance, the team certainly didn’t disappoint. After Sanju Samson toyed with the England national cricket team bowlers, making the most of that early dropped catch, the middle-order ensured the momentum didn’t slip away. The innings continued to gather pace as India marched forward confidently. There was a brief phase where things slowed down slightly, but Tilak Varma turned the tide dramatically. Taking on Jofra Archer in the penultimate over, he launched three towering sixes to push the total beyond the 250-run mark. The crowd rose to its feet. The Indian batting unit had once again stamped its authority, while England’s bowlers struggled to find any rhythm. In a game of this magnitude, where nerves can easily take over, India will feel they have put more than enough on the board. For England, however, it will now be about regrouping quickly and coming out all guns blazing in the Powerplay.Game on.Jacks to bowl the final over.Axar picks up a single off the first ball to get Hardik on strike.Six!! What an innings this has been. From being left out of the playing XI to returning with a roar - this has undoubtedly been Samson’s tournament. And this blistering 42-ball 89 will rank among his finest knocks. It’s one thing to perform in a Super 8 match, no matter how important it is, and quite another to deliver on the big stage of a semifinal. The nerves, the expectations, the magnitude of the occasion - all of it can weigh heavily on a player. But Samson handled everything perfectly tonight. That dropped catch early in the innings offered him a lifeline, and he made the most of it. Boundaries flowed, the confidence grew, and the pressure shifted firmly onto the England national cricket team.As Samson eventually fell 11 runs short of a well-deserved century, there was a murmur in the press box: “Yaar, he left a century right there…”That sentiment probably captures the mood across the stadium right now.But the game is far from over. With Shivam Dube and Suryakumar Yadav at the crease, India enters the most crucial phase of their innings. Can they keep the momentum going? Or will England find a way to claw back into the contest? The next few overs could shape the rest of the evening.Jacks brought back int othe attack.WICKET!! Sanju looks to loft a tossed-up ball, wide outside off over extra cover. Just seven from the over and a wicket. It’s raining fours and sixes at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, and Sanju Samson is striking them all around the park.Talk about comebacks, and this innings will rank right up there. Brimming with confidence after that mesmerising knock against the West Indies, Samson has simply picked up from where he left off earlier in Kolkata.Making the most of that dropped catch, he has not only brought up another fluent fifty but also pushed India firmly into the driver’s seat.A crucial partnership with Ishan Kishan laid the platform. Now, with Shivam Dube at the crease, the stage is set for further acceleration. At 160 for 2 in 13 overs, it’s already an imposing position. But on a surface like this, with the outfield lightning quick and the boundaries inviting, the team management, and the fans, will expect a total somewhere in the 230–240 range.Archer back into the attack. Good match up against the batters at the crease.Short of a length on Dube’s body, defended to the legside. Same length, same result. England will hope for more of this.Dube mistimes a shot down the ground, trickles to long on for one. Now for Sanju to take Archer on.Six!! Dube defends a back-of-a-length ball to mid off. Overton goes short, wide called.A dab to point gives Dube a single off the last ball. Overton pulls it back after the early four.Forty-five minutes into the game, and yet quite a few empty seats are visible at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. There are noticeable gaps in the upper tier of the Vijay Merchant Pavilion, and several seats remain unoccupied in the Sharad Pawar Stand and the Ajit Wadekar Stand.Interestingly, we were told the match was a complete sell-out. Tickets had vanished online days ago, and those lucky enough to get one reportedly had to pay a hefty premium. For now, though, the fans who have made it inside aren’t complaining. Sanju Samson is putting on a show, bringing up another fluent fifty and giving the crowd plenty to cheer about.Still, on a night like this, one hopes the stands fill up as the game progresses.Adil Rashid to Sanju. Dabbed to the leg side for a single.Full from Rashid. Kishan pounds it down the ground for a four.Rashid drifts a googly wide now. He pulls it to deep mid wicket for a single.Adil Rashid holds Sanju down for two singles to close off the over.Harry Brook couldn’t believe it. Neither could the England camp.A straightforward chance at mid-on - the kind fielders take nine times out of ten - went down. Brook put down a dolly and handed Sanju Samson a lifeline.Earlier, Jofra Archer had tested Samson with pace and bounce. The contest had its moments, Archer beating him here and there, even bouncing back with a fuller delivery after being struck for boundaries. It felt like the battle was tilting England’s way. They had already struck once by removing Abhishek Sharma early, and another wicket then could have tightened their grip on the contest. But Brook’s drop changed the mood.Samson made the most of the reprieve, regaining his rhythm and steering India to 67 for 1 at the end of the Powerplay. The outfield at Wankhede Stadium looks quick and the square boundaries are invitingly short. Once the ball pierces the infield, it’s racing to the rope.England may already feel they’ve let an opportunity slip. If it is to claw its way back, it needs a breakthrough soon - not just to slow the run flow, but to pick up wickets and wrest back control.Last over of the PowerPlay and Brook brings in Sam Curran. The left-arm pacer goes over the wicket to Samson. We start with England’s. A good presence of English fans in the stands. Now we have India’s national anthem and the crowd joins the collective chorus. Both India and England cancel each other out in the sphere of death bowling. Despite the home side having more fancied bowlers in the back end, both have conceded runs at 9.09 rpo this tournament. One reason for this is India’s use of the sixth bowler, Shivam Dube, in the death overs during encounters whose results have already been settled (the Zimbabwe encounter, for instance).Suryakumar Yadav is deep in conversation with Rohit Sharma. It’s a long, animated chat - the kind that often happens just before the biggest moments. Rohit has lived through enough highs and lows in his career to understand what knockout cricket demands. For Surya, this is a moment of enormous significance. A T20 World Cup semifinal. At home. At the iconic Wankhede Stadium. On nights like these, the stage doesn’t get bigger. The stands are slowly filling up. The demand for tickets has been frantic for days, and fans are willing to pay almost anything for that one prized entry. As Surya walks out for the toss, chants of “Surya, Surya” ripple through the stadium. Then comes the call.England wins the toss, and elects to field first. India fields an unchanged side, England brings in Overton, in place of Rehan Ahmed. It’s a smart, but expected, decision. The dew is likely to set in as the evening progresses, and chasing could become easier under lights. This means India has its task cut out. We’re going to have a bowl. Looks like a good wicket, hopefully we can get off to a good start with the ball. They’ve obviously got a lot more experience on this ground than us. T20 cricket is such a fickle game, you never know what’s going to happen. Hopefully we can keep them quiet (the crowd). From five matches early in 2025, he has claimed 14 wickets at a brilliant average of 9.85. He also has a fifer against the English, claimed in Rajkot.India is much more frugal in the middle overs in comparison to its opponent. Despite Adil Rashid’s brilliance and the favourable conditions in Sri Lanka, England’s spinners have conceded runs at 8.13. India has the second-best ER in this phase among all Super-Eight teams (7.19).Despite Abhishek Sharma failing to reproduce his form over the last couple of years, the team management will back him to come good at the business end. India is likely to field the same team that earned back-to-back wins.England brought Rehan Ahmed into the playing eleven in its final Super Eight encounter due to the conditions on offer. Despite playing a key role in the win, he could make way for Jamie Overton, looking at the conditions in Mumbai.India was guilty of dropping three chances during the crunch encounter against the West Indies. Two of them were straightforward chances by Abhishek Sharma, whose lack of confidence in batting seems to have spilt into his fielding as well.India cannot afford to give up as many chances against the English. Harry Brook’s side has an elongated middle order which could punish any such discrepancy. Both Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma have solid T20 records at the Wankhede.Samson - 614 runs (SR - 147.59 | AVG 32.31)Abhishek - 305 runs (SR - 161.37 | AVG 33.88)Alternatively, the Indian openers will also be tested by the fiery pace of Jofra Archer. Sanju Samson, who is coming off a match-winning 97 in the final Super Eight game, faces a negative match-up against Archer. With Abhishek Sharma yet to get fully into rhythm this tournament, the middle order will have to come to the front.A crucial factor in today’s contest will be how the teams perform during the PowerPlay. England’s Jos Buttler has been woefully short of runs this tournament. Salt, too, has only managed to fire a couple of times. The openers will be keen on correcting the wrongs on the big stage. If India plans to keep Jasprit Bumrah for the middle overs, Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya will need to replicate their best to oust the duo.Hello and welcome to the live coverage of the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal between India and England at the Wakhede Stadium. The sides will be looking to put forward the perfect performance to seal a place in the summit clash against New Zealand. Their performances have been less than ideal through the competition, relying on individual bravado to get across the line on more than one occassion.
