Man United's £100m Sandro Tonali interest depends on Michael Carrick's main objective this season

Manchester United have reportedly shown interest in Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali ahead of the summer window.

Ineos are scouring the market for a central midfielder, especially after the confirmation of Casemiro’s exit at the end of the season.

United’s top target is Elliot Anderson, with the 23-year-old enjoying a spectacular season at Nottingham Forest. But there is also interest in his signature from Manchester City.

Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton are also on United’s radar, and it seems Ineos are sticking with their Premier League theme with interest in Sandro Tonali.

According to The Telegraph, Tonali would require a £100m fee to be prised away from Newcastle United. On top of that, it is said the Italian wants Champions League football – that has to be Michael Carrick’s aim.

Newcastle find themselves down in 12th in the Premier League table, so qualifying for the Champions League looks unlikely. In contrast, United are up in fourth and are now five points clear of Liverpool in sixth.

Sporting director Jason Wilcox wants United to qualify for the Champions League, and Carrick is delivering better than anyone expected. With 13 games remaining this season, United are considered favourites to return to Europe.

United’s spending power will grow in the Champions League, and it will also make Old Trafford a much more attractive location for top players – Tonali is just one example.

Convincing the likes of Tonali, Anderson or Wharton to join the Red Devils will likely rely on Champions League qualification, so Carrick’s end to the season is of utmost importance.

Man United are ready to sting Newcastle… again

It sparked up an interesting rivalry between the two clubs and fanbases, and now United are ready to deal their biggest blow yet by potentially signing Tonali.

United must be careful, though, as Newcastle could use Tonali’s fee on Anderson to try and bring their former academy player back to St James’ Park.
