Ruben Amorim handed instant Man Utd injury boost as £60m star returns to training

Incoming Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is set to have Mason Mount available for his first game in charge after the £60million star returned to training.

Mount, 25, wasn't fit for the end of Erik ten Hag's tenure and missed the whole of October because of a nasty head cut which he suffered during the Red Devils' dire 3-0 loss at home to Tottenham. The former Chelsea midfielder has only made 25 appearances for United since his move from Stamford Bridge in July 2023, having been dealt a series of injury setbacks.

But as Amorim's arrival nears, Mount is on his way back to full fitness. On Monday, the 36-cap England international was pictured training under caretaker boss Ruud van Nistelrooy.

That means Mount could feature as soon as Thursday, with the Red Devils hosting PAOK Thessaloniki in the Europa League. United then play their final game before the international break at home to Leicester City on Sunday.

Amorim will take charge of his final match at Sporting Lisbon on the same day and with Mount unlikely to receive an England call-up, he'll potentially get to work with him as soon as next Monday when the international break begins. The 25-year-old could be one of the beneficiaries of Amorim's preferred 3-4-3 formation, having worked well in that shape under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea.

Tuchel, who'll also become England manager in January, utilised Mount's work rate and positional intelligence to great effect, as Chelsea won the Champions League in 2021. The Blues academy graduate lost his way after Tuchel was sacked in 2022 but that didn't stop Ten Hag from pushing to sign him last summer, as the Red Devils stumped up an initial £55m plus £5m in add-ons.

The now former United boss personally offered him the No.7 shirt to help convince him to join the Red Devils, with Arsenal and Liverpool also interested. Mount will be targeting a start in Amorim's first game away to Ipswich Town on Sunday, November 24.

Another of United's long-term absentees, Tyrell Malacia, also took part in training on Monday as he steps up his recovery. The Dutch left-back hasn't featured for club or country since June 2023. Meanwhile, new £52m defender Leny Yoro is closing in on a return to action, having suffered an ankle injury which required surgery in pre-season.
