Slavko Vincic, the referee who took charge of the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, has retired from football officiating at the age of 46, the Football Association of Slovenia has officially confirmed.

FIFA selected Vincic to oversee one of the most high-profile matches in world football, a fixture Spain won in a closely contested final.

During the match, he made a significant intervention by sending off Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez as Spain went on to win the game.

Vincic's Path to the Top

As explained on the Slovenian FA website, born on 25 November 1979 in Maribor, Vincic joined the international referees list in 2010 and steadily built a reputation as one of Europe's most reliable officials over the following decade and a half.

His early international exposure came at the 2012 European Championship, where he served as the sixth referee and was part of the Slovenian officiating team that advanced to the quarter-finals alongside the Greece versus Germany match.

The following year, Vincic officiated the final of the European Under-17 Championship in Slovakia, reaching the semi-finals of that tournament. His first knockout-stage appointment in senior European club competition arrived in 2015, when he took charge of the Europa League round of 16 tie between Guingamp and Dynamo Kyiv.

He continued to build his Europa League résumé in the seasons that followed, handling the Sparta Prague versus Krasnodar round of 16 clash in 2016 and then the Rome derby between Lazio and Roma in 2019.

Europa League Final Preceded World Cup Appointment

A landmark moment in Vincic's club career came on 18 May 2022, when he refereed the Europa League final in Seville between Eintracht Frankfurt and Glasgow Rangers, one of the most prestigious appointments available to a UEFA-listed referee.

That performance evidently strengthened his standing with FIFA, ultimately leading to his selection for the 2026 World Cup final; the pinnacle of any referee's career.
