BELFAST: Skipper Lorcan Tucker's blistering half-century, followed by Matt Hollard's three-wicket haul, led Ireland to a historic 34-run victory over reigning champions India in the first T20I of the two-match home series here at the Civil Service Cricket Club on Friday. The victory marked Ireland's first-ever over the three-time champions in the format and came after eight consecutive defeats.India's newly appointed captain Shreyas Iyer's decision to field first backfired as the home side piled up a formidable total of 182/9 in their 20 overs, courtesy of a defiant 64-run partnership for the fifth wicket between skipper Tucker and Gareth Delany. The duo batted sensibly against the momentum-filled Indian bowling attack and recovered Ireland from a shaky start, which saw them being reduced to 51/4 in 7.1 overs.Harshit Rana eventually broke the match-defining partnership on the third delivery of the 15th over by dismissing Tucker, who walked back after top-scoring with a 36-ball 50, studded with five fours and two sixes.Delany, on the other hand, was then involved in another crucial partnership, a 49-run stand for the sixth wicket with George Dockrell (19) before both perished in quick succession. The batting all-rounder made a vital contribution to Ireland's total with a quickfire 49 off just 32 deliveries, smashing three sixes and as many fours.Rana was the pick of the bowlers for India as he bagged three wickets for just 24 runs in his four overs, followed by Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel with two each, while Shivam Dube could claim one.Set to chase a daunting 183-run target, the touring side could muster 148 before getting all out in 18.5 overs despite Abhishek Sharma's blistering 49 up the order and thus succumbed to a gruelling defeat in the opening match of the series, whose subsequent fixture will be played at the same venue on Sunday.Top-ranked T20I batter Abhishek gave India a flamboyant start to the pursuit despite losing partners at the other end with a blazing 49 off 20 deliveries, comprising seven fours and two sixes. But following his dismissal in the eighth over, India lost two more wickets at an alarming rate and slipped further to 100/6 in 12 overs, needing 83 more off just 48 deliveries.Although all-rounders Shivam Dube (25) and Axar Patel (15) offered some resistance with a 35-run partnership, their back-to-back dismissals left India in a precarious position, needing 46 off 19 deliveries with just two wickets in hand.Matthew Humphreys inflicted the final blow on India's chances as he dismissed both Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh in the decisive penultimate over to round up a historic victory for the European side.Humphreys jointly led Ireland's spirited bowling charge with Hollard as both picked up three wickets each. Left-arm pacer Jai Moondra bagged two wickets, while Liam McCarthy and Delany chipped in with one scalp apiece.
