Liverpool news: Virgil van Dijk drops clear transfer hint as Arne Slot shares Man City theory

Liverpool have a brilliant opportunity to put one hand on the Premier League trophy this weekend against Manchester City.

Arne Slot's side sit top of the Premier League with an eight-point advantage ahead of the game. But they could potentially increase that to 11 points following Arsenal's defeat to West Ham on Saturday.

But they have a tough task on their hands in the form of Pep Guardiola's side. While City have endured a tricky season all round, they are still certainly capable of causing issues.

Take a look at all of the headlines from Anfield ahead of the game, as well as a number of intriguing transfer developments:

Van Dijk drops hint

Virgil van Dijk insists he is solely focused on Liverpool ’s bid for glory as opposed to his own future. He said: “It’s all about the next couple of months. To make sure we give everything.

“We are still in three competitions and we want to be successful in all three of them. And that is the main focus I’ve got. Very, very big plans in that sense. I want to make sure that this team is successful and that’s my main focus at the moment.

‌“I can’t speak about personal conversations that have obviously been going on for a while. I can only say that I am fully committed to the club. I love the fans, I love the club. I’ve had such an amazing time already. Let’s see what the future brings. But as long as I’m calm, I think the rest of the world can stay calm as well.”

Van Dijk remains out of contract at the end of the season. He is currently able to discuss terms with foreign clubs over a bosman move.

Slot shares Man City idea

Arne Slot believes that Liverpool are entirely different club to the one that regularly challenged Man City under Jurgen Klopp. The Dutchman said: "I think this is quite a new team, to be honest.

“I think only a few of them, maybe five or six, were in this rivalry and competition with City. For a large part, these players were brought in last season - or are younger players who have come through the ranks of the academy.

“So there are a few who have experienced this (losing to City), but for most of them this is a new situation. They have never lost the league because they have only just come in.”

Carragher eyes Arsenal star

Jamie Carragher has picked out the one Arsenal player who wishes played for Liverpool - Jurrien Timber. He said: "Without wishing to sound overly critical, Liverpool should have beaten Everton and Aston Villa.

“The goals they conceded were preventable. Whoever falls short this season will be asking themselves if they could have done a little more in the summer and January transfer windows.

"For Liverpool, I have been banging the drum about the need for defensive reinforcement and wish they had a full-back like Jurrien Timber. The recent injuries to Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley leave Slot short of cover."
