Alan Shearer has identified two positions Manchester United must strengthen in the transfer window – and the club appear to agree with the Premier League legend.

United acted quickly to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves after meeting the forward’s £62.5million valuation. Manager Ruben Amorim has since further strengthened his attacking options by sealing a deal worth up to £71m for former Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo, who made his debut in the draw with Everton on Sunday.

United will hope to bring in more new signings before the end of the transfer window as they seek to improve on their dismal 15th-place finish last season. However, Shearer has reiterated that Amorim must recruit reinforcements in certain positions.

“Two good signings…they need at least another three, I would say,” Shearer said on the Rest is Football podcast. “They need a top-class centre-forward and goalkeeper.”

While Shearer praised United’s two new signings, Gary Lineker had a clear five-word message for United’s recruitment team: “They need a lot more. A lot more.”

United appear to agree with Shearer and Lineker’s assessment. The club are targeting a move for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko. The 22-year-old is also wanted by Newcastle United, while Leipzig are claimed to be asking for £70m for the young centre-forward.

A new number nine would help United address a pivotal area in the team, despite Rasmus Hojlund wanting to fight for his place at Old Trafford. Sesko scored 21 goals and provided six assists in 45 games across all competitions last term.

Shearer also argued that United require a new goalkeeper, and Amorim may add to that department this summer. The Sun has reported that United are aiming for a new back-up shot-stopper to Andre Onana, with Antwerp's Senne Lammens mentioned as a possible target.

Onana is preparing for his third season as first-choice and any new signing is unlikely to immediately take his place in the team. This is despite United being linked with a move for PSG star Gianluigi Donnarumma, who is in the final year of his contract.

Meanwhile, it is unclear what a deal for Lammens or a similar understudy would mean for Altay Bayindir’s future. The 27-year-old was Fenerbahce captain before signing for United in 2023, but he has only made 11 appearances for the club.

On the pitch, United celebrated winning the Premier League Summer Series after their 2-2 draw with Everton, following their previous wins over West Ham and Bournemouth. In the aftermath of the Everton result, captain Bruno Fernandes accused the team of being “a little bit lazy”, but Amorim had no issues with the skipper calling for higher standards.

"It's saying that they understand the situation. So it's a good feeling. So tomorrow we are going to travel, one day off and we return to Carrington to work,” Amorim said when asked about Fernandes’ comments.

"Understanding that in this club everything is ups and downs. We understand that, but I prefer that feeling than the other side."
